Explore Lofoten by Car, Lofoten Islands

Overview

Explore the Lofoten Islands at your own pace with a road trip! One of the best ways to appreciate the stunning natural scenery of the islands is to follow the famous E10 road, which runs along the archipelago. You'll find numerous places to stop and admire the dramatic landscape along the way.

Two of the most popular fishing villages on Moskenesøya Island are Reine and Hamnøy. Reine is particularly scenic from the highway, with its red and white fishermen’s huts from the late 1800s—called rorbuer—dotting the shoreline. You can also admire the surrounding peaks of granite shooting out of the Reinefjorden. It's a quiet village, but many of the best hiking trails on the Lofoten Islands are within a short distance. Stop at the local market and stock up on food and supplies if you plan to enjoy an outdoor adventure!

The small neighboring town of Hamnøy is the oldest fishing village in the Lofoten archipelago. It's an unbelievably beautiful town, and you'll probably recognize it! Many photos depicting this region of Norway feature this iconic fishing village. If you're traveling in the winter months, try some of the local cod, which is in season at this time of the year.
