What you'll do
This relaxed, three-hour excursion begins with a pickup at your hotel and a transfer to the meeting point in La Fortuna, where you'll be greeted by your professional guide and get matched with a well-trained horse suited to your experience level. After a safety briefing and a quick orientation, it's time to set off along rainforest trails, catching glimpses of the Arenal volcano through breaks in the foliage.
You'll ride at a gentle pace, giving you the chance to soak up the sights and sounds of the rainforest as your guide points out interesting plants and wildlife along the trail. If you're lucky, you might see capuchin and howler monkeys playing in the canopy, or spot splashes of color as toucans and tanagers fly overhead.
The ride continues to the famous La Fortuna Waterfall, where you'll dismount and have time to explore and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Cool off with a dip in the pool at the base of the 230-foot (70 m) cascade, refresh with some drinks and snacks, then mount back up for the return ride to La Fortuna, where a transfer will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.
