What you'll do

Your experience begins at the Kadena fishing port, where you'll check in, change clothes if necessary, and meet your friendly guide. After a short orientation and paddling practice on land, you'll settle into a two-seat kayak and push off into the peaceful waters of the Hija River. The pace is unhurried, giving you time to adjust to paddling while taking in the scenic views of the unspoiled mangrove forest that lines the riverbanks.

As you kayak upriver, your guide will point out the variety of life that this ecosystem supports. Look for tiny crabs scuttling across roots, gobies (small, bottom-dwelling fish) darting through the shallows, and the tangled, above-ground roots of the salt-tolerant mangrove trees that seem to stretch directly from the water's surface. The river's calm conditions make this outing accessible to travelers of all ages—children as young as two can join—making it a perfect choice for families or anyone seeking a gentle immersion in nature.

After about an hour on the water, you'll return to shore, change into dry clothes, and receive a set of photos from your guide to take home with you. Because the experience lasts just two hours from start to finish, it's easy to pair with other nearby attractions such as Zakimi Castle Ruins, Cape Zanpa, Ryukyu Mura, and/or Yachimun no Sato.
