What you'll do
At City Hall Pier No. 3, you'll board the beautifully constructed SS Helena, a large, comfortable vessel from the 1940s with picnic bench seating, and receive a warm welcome from your captain and crew before departing. Year-round, the ship is equipped with infrared heaters and complimentary blankets to keep you cozy whatever the weather, with an onboard bar serving hot cocoa, mulled wine, and other snacks and drinks.
You'll sail through the pretty scenery of narrow straits and peaceful bays, surrounded by islands dotted with charming Norwegian cottages. Highlights include cruising past the Akershus Fortress, a 14th-century medieval castle located strategically at the tip of the headland, the modern National Opera House, and idyllic islands like Hovedøya, known for its natural beauty and historical ruins of a 12th-century monastery. You'll also cruise by Bygdøy, with its recognizable museums and 19th-century Dyna fyr (Dyna Lighthouse).
In the summer, you'll enjoy the refreshing sea breeze as you follow SS Helena's original route, past Nesodden and across the Bundefjord. The winter route sticks closer to home, avoiding the Bundefjord crossing.
Your summer sightseeing ticket includes unlimited use of the Bygdøy ferries for the day, allowing you to visit its museums and attractions on the peninsula, such as the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, and the Fram Museum. Alternatively, with your winter ticket, you can disembark the SS Helena at Bygdøy on the morning cruise and return to the city center on the next departure.
