Oslofjord Sightseeing Cruise by Traditional Boat, Oslo

4.8 (12 reviews)
Sail the Oslofjord aboard a classic 1946 vessel and see Oslo and its landmarks from another perspective.

Overview

Cruise around the Oslofjord aboard the SS Helena and see the capital's sights from your unique vantage point on the water. From downtown Oslo, you'll sail through narrow sounds and past picturesque islands with colorful houses, iconic landmarks, and the museums and historic lighthouse on the Bygdøy peninsula. Take in the views with a hot drink and snack from the bar, cozying under a warm blanket or beneath an infrared heater. Depending on the season, the route may vary (winter tickets avoid the coldest part of the fjord), both seasons offering opportunities to disembark and check out Bygdøy's museums.

What you'll do

At City Hall Pier No. 3, you'll board the beautifully constructed SS Helena, a large, comfortable vessel from the 1940s with picnic bench seating, and receive a warm welcome from your captain and crew before departing. Year-round, the ship is equipped with infrared heaters and complimentary blankets to keep you cozy whatever the weather, with an onboard bar serving hot cocoa, mulled wine, and other snacks and drinks.

You'll sail through the pretty scenery of narrow straits and peaceful bays, surrounded by islands dotted with charming Norwegian cottages. Highlights include cruising past the Akershus Fortress, a 14th-century medieval castle located strategically at the tip of the headland, the modern National Opera House, and idyllic islands like Hovedøya, known for its natural beauty and historical ruins of a 12th-century monastery. You'll also cruise by Bygdøy, with its recognizable museums and 19th-century Dyna fyr (Dyna Lighthouse).

In the summer, you'll enjoy the refreshing sea breeze as you follow SS Helena's original route, past Nesodden and across the Bundefjord. The winter route sticks closer to home, avoiding the Bundefjord crossing.

Your summer sightseeing ticket includes unlimited use of the Bygdøy ferries for the day, allowing you to visit its museums and attractions on the peninsula, such as the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, and the Fram Museum. Alternatively, with your winter ticket, you can disembark the SS Helena at Bygdøy on the morning cruise and return to the city center on the next departure.

Tips for future travelers

This is on an old sailing vessel and all seating is outdoors, although many areas are covered and out of the wind and rain

Tips for future travelers

Try the local drink for sure! I didn't know that you could stay for the Fram museum and they would pick you up later. Something to consider as you build your itinerary (we had Fram museum on day 2 so didn't take advantage of that at the moment)
