What you'll do

Begin your day with a scenic drive from your La Fortuna hotel around Arenal Volcano to access the lava field trails of Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal (Arenal Volcano National Park). The network is named after the volcano's last major eruption, which transformed the surrounding landscape and created new lava fields. As you make your way, you'll be able to marvel at the beautiful views of Arenal and the unique topography created by the eruption. Not to mention, spot animals if they decide to show themselves. Once at the top of the trail, you can pause to enjoy the views of Lake Arenal, and if the weather allows, you might even catch sight of pyroclastic gases escaping from the volcano's fissures.

You'll next head back around the park east to La Fortuna Waterfall, an approximate 246-foot (75 m) waterfall located at the base of the dormant El Chato. Descend the 500-step staircase down to a lookout platform to take in the stunning natural beauty before you and snap pics of the cascade. If you're up for it, refresh with a swim in Río La Fortuna below the falls before readying yourself to make the return ascent and carry on to La Finquita Farm & Restaurant, a project dedicated to regenerative and holistic agriculture, for a farm-to-plate lunch of authentic Costa Rican fare.

We didn’t see as much animals but our guide was so knowledgeable about the plants.
The waterfall is literally 500 stairs down and then up. Be ready to make that hike!

This was the least "authentic" activity we had the entire trip and I would not recommend spending over half a day on these canned excursions. Read more

Not worth doing a private tour of the volcano hike or waterfall as these are extremely public areas to begin with. Easy to do both in a self guided fashion but our tour guide was still great and the transit was timely. Read more

Tips for future travelers

Definitely go to both but not necessary to do it toured.
