What you'll do

This private excursion starts with a transfer to a local farm, where you'll be introduced to Costa Rica's coffee history and industry. With your knowledgeable private guide, you'll examine the life cycle of a coffee plant from seed to plant to fruit. You'll learn how coffee cherries are picked and hear about the workers who immigrate here during harvest season.

If you're visiting from November through February, you may be invited to pick a few coffee cherries. Then, learn how pulp was traditionally removed from the coffee cherry and discover how the cherry is washed and separated. At the drying patio, you'll see how Costa Rica's hot and dry climate allows the coffee beans to be spread out on a large terrace and dried naturally in the sun. Stop into the warehouse to learn how coffee beans are stored in large fiber sacks that allow them to breathe and complete their aging process. And finally, you'll get the chance to taste a rich, dark brew of the freshest coffee.

Next, you'll learn about the chocolate-making process, from seed to chocolate bar. Try your hand at grinding cacao beans, then taste several types of chocolate, including dark, milk, and white. At the end of the experience, find out about the importance of sugar cane in Costa Rica. Learn how to extract this sweet nectar using a traditional press and taste a glass of fresh, pure sugar cane juice. You'll head back to Monteverde to finish the excursion.
