What you'll do
After a transfer from La Fortuna, you'll receive an overview of Proyecto Asis from your private guide. You'll then tour the grounds, observing a variety of temporary residents—which may include monkeys, sloths, anteaters, reptiles, and birds— and learning about wildlife conservation. As you traverse the trails, you'll learn about their unique stories and roles within their ecosystems. (Because the center's goal is to release as many animals back into the wild as possible, the wildlife present at the center is subject to change.)
The second part of your experience involves rolling up your sleeves for meaningful, hands-on volunteering. Here, you'll help in preparing diets for the animals, gaining a firsthand understanding of the crucial role nutrition plays in maintaining their health and well-being. Your guides will explain how carefully curated diets support each species' specific needs and the broader implications of nutrition on animal welfare.
As your volunteering continues, you'll participate in creating enrichment toys designed to stimulate the animals' natural behaviors and enhance their daily routines. Under the careful guidance of the organization's team, you'll learn how these activities are tailored to the unique characteristics of each species to promote their mental and physical well-being. Although only trained staff are permitted to feed the animals due to guidelines from the Ministry of Environment, you'll have the opportunity to observe this process and see how nutrition and enrichment are integrated into their care regime.
Lunch and a coffee break are included. After several hours at Proyecto Asis, you'll return to La Fortuna with a newfound understanding of Costa Rica's wildlife and the importance of protecting the animals' natural habitats.

With options for morning, afternoon, or night walks, you'll follow a short trail with a naturalist guide skilled in spotting two-toed and three-toed sloths hanging out in the trees. If you're lucky, you may even get to observe a mother sloth with her baby. Ideal for families, wildlife lovers (and anyone charmed by these gentle animals), you'll gain insight into sloth protection efforts and the chance to see these eternally smiling creatures, along with other endemic flora and fauna.

Sky Adventures Tram & The Hand of Arenal

Ecological Park & Butterfly Garden Nature Walk
Perfect for nature lovers and curious kids, this gentle nature walk introduces you to the plants and animals of a private ecological park just outside La Fortuna. You'll have the chance to spot tree frogs, caimans, monkeys, sloths, and a wide variety of birds as you follow your guide along groomed trails surrounded by secondary forest. Stop at botanical gardens, a butterfly garden, and a wetlands area that serves as a bird nesting site, then finish the experience with a visit to a Maleku cultural center to learn about Indigenous traditions and environmental practices.

Nocturnal Rainforest Walk
Experience the rainforest after dark on this guided excursion of Ecocentro Danaus, a private ecological reserve near La Fortuna. As the sun goes down, you'll venture into the jungle, exploring this haven for plants, insects, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Highlights your guide will point out along the way include bats, spiders, sloths, snakes, and some of the reserve's many native frog species, including the brightly-colored poison dart frog, one of the planet's most poisonous frogs. Since the reserve is closed to most groups by nightfall, this is an exclusive opportunity to see how the rainforest transforms after dark.

Private Sloth & Bird Hike
Explore the beautiful area of Arenal with a unique excursion to the "sloth trail." This guided hike will take you on a 1.2-mile (2 km) nature trail through 50 acres of tropical forest located just a few minutes from La Fortuna. The trail is named after the sloths that inhabit the area, including both two-toed and three-toed sloths that can be seen hanging on the branches of the cecropia trees while feeding on their bright green leaves. On this two-hour tour, you'll have the chance to spot these fascinating animals, including mother sloths and their babies. Your bilingual guide will also point out other local wildlife, such as exotic birds and reptiles, including the famous red-eyed tree frog.

Sky Adventures Hanging Bridges
Explore the forest from an elevated perspective on this excursion to Sky Walk, one of the first hanging bridges in Costa Rica. Follow a naturalist guide along a series of nature trails and five suspension bridges (some as high as 230 feet or 70 meters), stopping to appreciate various flora and fauna along the way. You'll see monkeys and snakes if you're lucky! During the 2-mile (3-km) hike, you'll enjoy views over the forest canopy and spot colorful birds, butterflies, and insects.
