Proyecto Asis Wildlife Rehabilitation Center - Volunteer Experience, Arenal/La Fortuna

4.8 (6 reviews)
Learn about wildlife conservation and have the chance to interact with animals at this rescue and rehabilitation center

Overview

Visit Proyecto Asis, a wildlife rehabilitation and rescue center. A naturalist guide will lead you on a tour, introducing you to the resident animals and sharing their stories. You'll likely see anteaters, monkeys, snakes, parrots, sloths, and more. (Because the center's goal is to release as many animals back into the wild as possible, the wildlife present at the center is subject to change.) During your visit, you'll learn about conservation and sustainability. As part of the volunteer tour, you will also have hands-on opportunities with the animals. Learn how to prepare and serve food to the animals, interact with them (following the guide's instructions), help clean cages or craft animal toys, and more. You will go home with unforgettable memories!

What you'll do

Proyecto Asis, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center, is a great place to visit even if your time is limited. Established in January 2022 to protect local wildlife and promote environmental conservation, the center features a Spanish school where students can immerse themselves in Costa Rican culture and language. Proyecto Asis also offers a volunteer program providing opportunities for travelers to get involved in environmental conservation through community service.

After a transfer from La Fortuna, receive an overview of the organization from your naturalist guide. Then you'll tour the grounds, observing a variety of temporary residents — including monkeys, sloths, anteaters, reptiles, birds, and more — and learning about wildlife conservation.

Depending on the animals present during your visit, you will have the chance to help the center's staff prepare and serve them food. Participants on the volunteer tour will also have chances to interact with animals in other ways, depending on the circumstances at the time of your visit. You might be able to clean cages or make toys for the animals, for example.

Lunch and a coffee break are included. After several hours at Proyecto Asis, you'll return to La Fortuna with a newfound understanding of Costa Rica's wildlife and the importance of protecting the animals' natural habitats.

Spending the morning at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was one of our trip highlights. We had a small group tour with 2 other families and our guide was fabulous! He provided an educational and engaging overview of the center. The volunteer experience was fun...we weighed, measured and chopped up fruits for the wildlife and then put the meals in home-made kongs, then delivered to the animals. Read more
