What you'll do

After a transfer from La Fortuna, you'll receive an overview of Proyecto Asis from your private guide. You'll then tour the grounds, observing a variety of temporary residents—which may include monkeys, sloths, anteaters, reptiles, and birds— and learning about wildlife conservation. As you traverse the trails, you'll learn about their unique stories and roles within their ecosystems. (Because the center's goal is to release as many animals back into the wild as possible, the wildlife present at the center is subject to change.)

The second part of your experience involves rolling up your sleeves for meaningful, hands-on volunteering. Here, you'll help in preparing diets for the animals, gaining a firsthand understanding of the crucial role nutrition plays in maintaining their health and well-being. Your guides will explain how carefully curated diets support each species' specific needs and the broader implications of nutrition on animal welfare.

As your volunteering continues, you'll participate in creating enrichment toys designed to stimulate the animals' natural behaviors and enhance their daily routines. Under the careful guidance of the organization's team, you'll learn how these activities are tailored to the unique characteristics of each species to promote their mental and physical well-being. Although only trained staff are permitted to feed the animals due to guidelines from the Ministry of Environment, you'll have the opportunity to observe this process and see how nutrition and enrichment are integrated into their care regime.

Lunch and a coffee break are included. After several hours at Proyecto Asis, you'll return to La Fortuna with a newfound understanding of Costa Rica's wildlife and the importance of protecting the animals' natural habitats.

Tips for future travelers

I'm not sure that our volunteering actually helps this place because all we did was prepare food. I would recommend more water and don't expect to hold/touch or really interact directly with any of the animals. I didn't feel like we truly contributed to the place.

Spending the morning at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was one of our trip highlights. We had a small group tour with 2 other families and our guide was fabulous! He provided an educational and engaging overview of the center. The volunteer experience was fun...we weighed, measured and chopped up fruits for the wildlife and then put the meals in home-made kongs, then delivered to the animals. Read more
