What you'll do

The tour starts with a morning departure from La Fortuna. The transfer to Maleku Indigenous Reserve takes about an hour. You'll arrive at the first town (locally referred to as a "Palenque"), Tonjibe. Together with the communities of Margarita and El Sol, the town is part of a larger territory of 7396 acres (2993 hectares) and 1000 inhabitants.

Follow your guide through the village, interacting with members of the tribe and hearing their dialect, Maleku Jaica. As the tour continues, you'll learn about native traditions, from craftsmanship to agriculture to funerary customs. You'll also walk through the forest to see some of the medicinal plants the tribe uses daily, following in their ancestors' footsteps. Try your hand at archery, the tribe's ancient hunting method, using a traditional bow and arrow.

With your guide, return to the main ranch and attend a Maleku cultural demonstration featuring dance and music. You might even be welcomed onstage to participate.

Finish the tour with a traditional Costa Rican lunch with your guide. You'll get to try mafuriseka, a fish-based dish steamed in banana leaves and accompanied by vegetables and fresh fruit juice.

You'll return to La Fortuna in the early afternoon.

Only two in our group again. It was informative and we were able to pick up some lovely artwork for home. A walk through the jungle (wear bug repellent) to discuss the medicinal plants. Entertainment, which we got to take part in. We also shot arrows and had lunch. They very sweetly had prepared to pieces with our names on them which they gave to us. A lovely visit. Read more
