Overview

Venture into the Children's Eternal Forest, the largest private reserve in Costa Rica, for a nighttime hike. Your naturalist guide will lead you along the park's trails after dark, pointing out nocturnal wildlife in the rainforest. In addition to mammals, reptiles, and insects, the reserve is home to more than 300 kinds of birds. The activity starts right after nightfall, allowing you to watch some animals awakening and others seeking their nests or caves to sleep.

What you'll do

Leave Monteverde in the early evening and transfer to the entrance of the Children's Eternal Rainforest. The largest private reserve in Costa Rica, it's part of UNESCO's Water and Peace Biosphere and a founding member of the Costa Rican Network of Private Reserves. 

Begin your nocturnal hike with your naturalist guide, who will explain the reserve's efforts to maintain, preserve, and rehabilitate the region's ecosystems and biodiversity through environmental education, reforestation, sustainable development, and ecotourism. The guide will also point out wildlife, including mammals, insects, reptiles, and more than 300 varieties of birds.

Take in the sights and sounds of the rainforest at night before returning to Monteverde.

This was a fun activity for everyone. Not too strenuous, saw lots of spiders, poison dart frogs, cayman, turtles and butterflies. Felt safe while doing it. The only thing that I would have preferred would be for our tour group to be a little smaller. Read more

We had rain and thunder and had to turn back and leave after 10 mins….. this was no fault of anyone obviously…..just Mother Nature and bad luck

Tips for future travelers

There's a great coffee shop and natural foods store nearby. I enjoyed watching people bring from home things they made for the store and be bought things like fresh cheese and homemade kombucha.
