Very quiet hotel away from the trust traffic but not too far from the attractions, airport and train
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You'll stay in Cannaregio, Venice's quieter northern neighborhood, with plenty of historic sites and excellent restaurants on your doorstep.
- The hotel's Venetian-Moorish decor is inspired by the nearby Campo dei Mori, and you'll find characterful touches like tented canopies, lantern-like lamps, and arched doorways throughout the interiors.
- Even the smallest room options are spacious by Venetian standards, with suites verging on the palatial.
- The ground-floor bar serves cocktails and snacks, with seating in the open-air courtyard or on the canalside terrace.
- There's no on-site restaurant, but you're within easy strolling distance of Cannaregio's lively canalside dining scene.
Authenticity
Spread across a historic 15th-century palazzo and several adjoining buildings, Ai Mori d'Oriente is named for the nearby Campo dei Mori (Square of the Moors), where statues of 12th-century silk and spice merchants (and a requisite camel) highlight Venice's historic trade with the Middle East. The Venetian-Moorish themes continue throughout the interiors, where you'll find rich fabrics in shades of crimson and saffron, lantern-like pendant lamps, and Bedouin tent-inspired beds.
Location
You'll stay in Cannaregio, a lively residential neighborhood steeped in history. It's home to Europe's oldest Jewish quarter and some of the city's best restaurants and bàcari (bars), but free from the crowds of San Marco to the south, giving it a quieter, more authentic feel. The hotel overlooks the Sensa canal near Campo dei Mori, and it's a 25-minute walk to the San Lucia train station and landmarks such as the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco. The nearest vaporetto stop is a couple of blocks away, and private water taxis dock right in front of the hotel.
Rooms & Bathrooms
All 50 air-conditioned rooms are decorated in the hotel's signature Venetian-Moorish style, with rich jewel tones and opulent velvet and damask textiles. Headboards and doorways echo the lines of exotic Venetian arches, while upgraded rooms feature tent-like draped canopies. Marble bathrooms are spacious and modern, with shower/tub combos. Some rooms face internal courtyards or alleys; upgrade to a Deluxe for canal views, or bag the showstopping Suite with two sets of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Rio di Madonna dell'Orto. Accessible rooms are available, and all floors are reachable via elevator.
Amenities
The hotel's wood-paneled bar is a highlight, with tuxedoed bartenders slinging cocktails til midnight and seating spilling out into an internal courtyard. There's no restaurant, but you can order light snacks at the bar or through room service, and breakfast is served daily in a light-filled room facing the canal. Expect a standard continental buffet, with gluten-free options and freshly cooked dishes available at an added cost.
Family-Friendliness
Children are welcome at Ai Mori d'Oriente, though you won't find much in the way of kid-focused amenities. Kids under 12 stay free, and there are various interconnecting suites to suit larger groups and families.
