Camillas Hus

Comfort
An intimate boutique hotel with tasteful decor and warm service, across the street from Palace Park.

Overview

Hidden behind a busy street, this charming hotel has just seven unique rooms and provides a quiet alternative to bigger properties in Oslo. The historic clapboard property is just a short walk to the Royal Palace (where members of the Norwegian monarchy reside), surrounded by walking and jogging paths. Service is warm and attentive with personal touches like fresh flowers and fruit upon arrival. Other freebies include parking (a rarity in Oslo) and quality breakfasts at the restaurant next door.

Pros
  • Enjoy elegant rooms that include mini-bars, bathrobes, slippers, and spacious bathrooms—some with claw-foot tubs.
  • Guests are across the street from a beautifully manicured park with gardens, and walking and jogging paths, as well as walking distance to some of Oslo’s main attractions.
  • Complimentary made-to-order breakfast is served daily at the classy restaurant next door, and the minimal but friendly hotel staff is available 24 hours a day (in person or online).
Cons
  • There are no common spaces for working or relaxing, though the restaurant next door is available for drinks and meals (and Wi-Fi).
  • Guests are an uphill walk—about 20-25 minutes—from Oslo’s main train station, and a taxi is recommended when arriving with luggage.

Authenticity

Tucked beyond the street entrance is a small house that acts as the front desk, giving Camillas Hus an authentic feel from the start. The hotel is part of a series of preserved buildings on the street that date back to the mid-19th century. A member of the small staff will check you in and show you to your room (arrival times are likely determined in advance) through a rear entrance to the main clapboard house, which faces a small parking area. Upon entering, the space can feel as if arriving at a friend’s elegant home. Given the rich interiors, this hotel is best suited for romantics, solo travelers, or groups who want to book the entire property for an intimate event. Families with little ones in tow or mobility issues may want to consider other options due to the peaceful, adults-only vibe, lack of common spaces, and stair access.

Location

Camillas Hus is located in a pretty neighborhood near independent shops and restaurants. It’s also right across the street from a spacious park that leads to the Royal Palace—the main residence for the Norwegian monarchy—surrounded by photogenic gardens and walking paths. In the other direction, about 30 minutes by foot, is another major green space, called Frogner, home of the Vigeland Sculpture Park. Most other Oslo highlights like Aker Brygge’s waterfront are accessible on foot with a pair of good walking shoes—also within about 30 minutes. If arriving from Oslo’s central train station, you can walk uphill through Palace Park to get to the property or take a taxi. If you have a car, parking is free.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Each of the seven bedrooms in this historic building is individually decorated, and what they have in common is elegant decor with period furnishings, as well as tall ceilings (and tall windows) that add to the roomy feel. Guests can help themselves to the mini bars, tea and coffee, and a plate of fresh fruit on arrival. Spacious, well-decorated bathrooms come with bathrobes, slippers, and L’Occitane bath products, and some have both walk-in showers and clawfoot tubs.

Other Highlights

Reception hours for this small hotel are limited but a member of staff is always available online if there is a problem or question in the evenings. They’ll also arrange check-in time in advance so someone will be there to greet you no matter when you arrive. The hotel is directly next door to a classic restaurant called Park 29 with gourmet French and Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner. There’s also a full bar and an impressive wine list, and guests can dine inside or on the seasonal terrace. One room of the restaurant is reserved for hotel guests where you can order made-to-order breakfasts each morning, included in the price.
