Overview
Kimkim's Take
- You'll have front-row access to wildlife with marine iguanas that wander right past the hotel, and you'll likely spot blue-footed boobies, pelicans, and Sally Lightfoot crabs without even trying.
- Iguana Crossing has a prime beachfront setting with walking access to Puerto Villamil's town center.
- Whether you choose a room with oceanfront or volcano-facing views, the natural scenery is always the highlight.
- There are family-friendly room types that accommodate 3-4 guests, as well as a basement playroom dedicated to kids.
- You'll find fresh seafood, Ecuadorian specialties like ceviche and sancocho, plus ingredients sourced from local farms (and the hotel's own).
- While the restaurant is solid, the variety is more limited, leaving you wanting.
- Rooms feel a little lacking in character, though they're perfectly comfortable and provide everything you need.
Authenticity
Iguana Crossing is a purpose-built eco-hotel designed to highlight its surrounding ocean and volcanic views, with architecture and interiors that draw on local craftsmanship and materials. The restaurant serves regional Ecuadorian dishes like ceviche and sancocho (a fish-and-yucca soup) alongside seafood sourced from the day's catch and produce from nearby farms—including ingredients grown on the hotel's own highland property. Even the hotel's name is tied to the daily movements of nearby marine iguanas.
Location
Set along a 3-mile (4.8 km) stretch of white sand at the edge of Puerto Villamil and backing onto a lagoon and the Scalesia forest, Iguana Crossing gives you direct access to both marine and inland ecosystems ripe for watersports, hiking, and wildlife viewing. You're within minutes of the small town center, home to a handful of restaurants, with ocean views on one side and forested volcanic landscapes on the other. It's a 30-minute drive to the Sierra Negra volcano, with the El Mango viewpoint only a 12-minute drive en route, while snorkeling fun is to be had at Las Tintoreras, a short boat ride away, and the Wetlands Complex is a 7-minute walk away.
Rooms & Bathrooms
Designed to let the views take center stage, the hotel's 14 rooms face either the ocean or the surrounding volcanic highlands. Expect eight room types, ranging from Twin and Triple rooms that look out onto the Scalesia forest surrounding the Sierra Negra volcano to more spacious suites with private terraces overlooking the turquoise sea. Interiors are simple, yet adequate, with tiled floors, white walls, and marble and wood furnishings. Bathrooms are modern and functional.
Amenities
The Oasis, the on-site restaurant, focuses on creative Ecuadorian dishes and fresh, local ingredients—from seafood caught the same day to produce sourced from nearby farms, including the hotel's own property. There's an expansive wood sun deck with an infinity pool and sun beds, a lounge bar, and a second bar on the roof, with a Jacuzzi, and additional rooftop lounge space. There's also a dedicated children's playroom complete with table tennis and a pool table.
Family-Friendliness
Iguana Crossing works well for families, especially with room configurations that include multiple beds and flexible layouts, and a basement playroom that keeps the kids entertained. The Master Suite and Ocean View Room with Balcony accommodate families of four, while the Triple Room sleeps three guests. The beachfront setting gives kids space to explore safely, and Puerto Villamil's laidback pace makes it easy for families to settle in.
Wildlife
Marine iguanas regularly pass through the area, moving between their nesting grounds and the ocean just steps from the hotel. Birdlife is equally active, with sightings of blue-footed boobies, pelicans, frigatebirds, and herons common, while on the lava rocks, bright Sally Lightfoot crabs dart between crevices.
Sustainability
Sustainability is woven into the hotel's approach, from eco-conscious design to sourcing materials and food locally. By working with nearby farms and suppliers, Iguana Crossing supports the island's community while reducing its environmental footprint. The property emphasizes respect for the fragile Galápagos ecosystem, encouraging guests to see themselves as temporary visitors in a protected environment. Staying here contributes to ongoing efforts to preserve the natural landscapes and wildlife that make the islands so unique.
