Beautiful historic residence steps from the Roman Bridge in Old Town with rooftop plunge pools, in-house dining, bar, and spa

Overview

Elegant Palácio de Tavira is a recently restored 19th-century aristocratic residence on a picturesque calçada-paved square lined with a church, cafés, and restaurants, just steps from the Gilão River and a short drive to the Algarve's barrier-island beaches. Light-filled rooms are split between the original palace—with high ceilings, pale wood floors, and accents in duck egg blue—and a contemporary medina-style wing in warmer tones with terracotta tiles and private terraces. Amenities center on slow, sensory experiences, including a rooftop with two plunge pools overlooking the Tavira skyline, a small spa featuring locally sourced herbs and oils, and a restaurant highlighting fresh-caught seafood and regional flavors.

Pros
  • You're centrally located, on an attractive central square, steps from the river and historic sights, and only a 15-minute car ride to the wide stretch of sandy beaches along the Atlantic.
  • Whether you choose the palace or medina side, design-forward rooms and beautifully tiled en-suites are gorgeous, bright, and airy, outfitted with natural materials (wood, limestone, rattan, wool, etc), soft light, and a calm, uncluttered aesthetic.
  • You don't have to go far to drink and dine, the breakfast buffet is highly-rated with a spread of classic bites (pastries, cold cuts, fresh bread) as well as an a la carte menu, and the in-house restaurant serves delicious seafood-focused dishes (as well as other meat and veg options), and Bar Lua is an easy, atmospheric spot to ease into the evening.
  • The two small rooftop pools aren't for swimming laps, but they're perfect for a cooling dip while taking in Tavira's church-dotted skyline.
  • The staff here go above and beyond, helping with luggage and introducing you to the property, from your room to the rooftop pools.
  • Thoughtful touches like beach towels and a bag to transport them in are appreciated, as are the minibars stocked with regional treats like Algarvian rosé, craft beer, and sweet potato chips.
Cons
  • Service may still be finding its rhythm; as a newer opening, there have been some inconsistencies, particularly at the front desk and restaurant (though the team is actively improving).
  • As a historic building, you can expect stairs throughout, though there's a single accessible guest room, and the spa and restaurant are accessible, too.
  • There isn't any on-site parking, though two large public lots are about a 5-minute walk away.

Authenticity

Housed in a 19th-century noble residence once owned by the Tavares family, Palácio de Tavira blends history with thoughtful contemporary design. Portuguese architects Fragmentos carefully restored the building, preserving features like the original stone staircase, thick whitewashed walls, and hand-restored wood floors, while adding a striking white "medina" extension inspired by the region's Moorish past. Throughout the property, local artistry and craftsmanship shine—from Santa Catarina terracotta tiles and Burel wool rugs to contemporary artworks by Algarve artist Vanessa Barragão in the restaurant and landscape watercolors in the rooms.

Location

Palácio de Tavira sits in the historic center of Tavira, opening directly onto a lively town square. You're well placed to wander the cobbled streets, riverside cafés, and historic churches that give Tavira its reputation as one of the Algarve's most characterful towns—step outside, and the 17th-century Church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda is to your right, while a 2-minute stroll brings you to the Roman Bridge and the river. The coast is close by (as is the Spanish border and more than 15 golf courses), with Tavira's long sandy barrier-island beaches less than 15 minutes away by car.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel's 36 rooms are split between the original palace and a newer medina-inspired wing. In the historic building, guest rooms, done up in a muted blue-green palette, highlight the palace's original proportions, with tall ceilings, restored oak floors, and limestone bathrooms—some with large windows and views over the square out front or courtyard. Medina rooms feel warmer and more contemporary, featuring terracotta tiles and earthy burnt orange and brown tones. They're arranged around tiled patios and gardens, some with an outdoor shower. Across categories—from simple standards to spacious suites—you'll find natural materials, muted tones, and thoughtful touches like Burel wool rugs.

Amenities

The hotel offers several inviting spaces to unwind, including two small rooftop pools, each fronted by an equally small deck with sunbeds, and the Luma spa, with personalized treatments that incorporate the Azorean skincare brand Ignäe, alongside native herbs and essential oils. Mirsal restaurant highlights Algarve and Mediterranean cuisine, serving dishes like octopus à lagareiro, saffron risotto, and fresh seafood from Tavira's coastal waters. Evenings often begin with cocktails at cozy Bar da Lua (which opens to a pretty garden), and mornings start with a generous breakfast spread of pastries, fruit, and made-to-order classics like eggs Benedict or pancakes (typically not included in the room rate).

Family-Friendliness

Better suited to couples, dedicated Family Room options connect two guest rooms and sleep up to four guests. Parents should note that, as a historic listed building, the property includes multiple staircases.

I love, love, love this former palace turned hotel!!! Historic hotel centrally located in the old town of Tavira and near many restaurants, cafes, shops, and historical sites! The building itself is all white, which is in line with the Algarve region and Moorish influences.

The staff is friendly and helped carry my luggage up the stairs, showed me my room, and showed me the different pools on site. Every staff member I encountered was so kind. There were touches of green plants and vegetation that paired nicely with the white hotel.

My room had a view of the city and the ocean in the distance. I was on the top floor, but keep in mind that the top two levels are only accessible via stairs. The first level can be accessed via elevator, but it was not working when I was there.

The breakfast was delicious, offering a mix of buffet and menu options to choose from. The bar on site is beautiful and is near the courtyard for lounging, reading, or relaxing.

I definitely will come back and stay here again!
