Refugio Amazonas Lodge, Puerto Maldonado

Secluded jungle lodge in a private reserve with rustic cabins and nature walks

Overview

Refugio Amazonas is a rustic retreat set deep within the rainforest, surrounded by the beauty of the Tambopata National Reserve. This secluded 32-bedroom jungle lodge is about two hours from the Puerto Maldonado Airport in southeastern Peru. You can easily explore nearby attractions such as Lago Condenado, Chuncho Clay Lick, and the Canopy Tower, all while contributing directly to the conservation of the Amazonian forests.

The lodge offers comfortable guestrooms with a private balcony, free WiFi, and private bathrooms equipped with showers and designer toiletries. You can embrace an authentic jungle experience, as the rooms are open to the surrounding wilderness. Previous kimkim travelers have praised the knowledgeable staff and guides, who make the entire stay feel like a wilderness camp.

What truly sets Refugio Amazonas apart is its commitment to ecotourism and forest recovery. During your stay, you'll have the chance to observe Amazonian fauna and attend nightly talks by field researchers about the conservation projects underway. The lodge is a hidden gem, surrounded by Brazilian Nut trees, one of the main food sources in the Amazon.

My wife and kids had a great time. The room was comfortable with one open wall, which looked out into the forest. The activities were interesting and fun and we never were disappointed with the wildlife we observed.

Authenticity & Character
Very authentic - perhaps too authentic (no power for part of the night), but my kids loved it!
Location
Flora and fauna on all sides!
Staff
Very helpful - arranged to have laundry done, even though that wasn't part of their regular service. The guides were amazing - we would have missed a lot of incredible wildlife without our eagle-eyed guide.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Not a resort - but we spent all our time outdoors trekking through the forest.
