The Fish Hotel & Retreat, Broadway

Upscale
Secluded countryside estate with a quirky but luxurious collection of rooms, tree houses, and shepherds' huts

Overview

Offering a back-to-nature stay without skimping on luxury, The Fish sits on a sprawling private estate above the town of Broadway. Accommodations are spread throughout renovated farm buildings, romantic shepherd's huts, and whimsical treehouses, all decorated with a chic Scandinavian-meets-English countryside aesthetic and featuring options such as private terraces, outdoor hot tubs, and rolltop baths. Guests can head to the contemporary central lodge for meals at the bistro-style restaurant and nightcaps at the cozy bar, or stop by the "boot room" to get outfitted for one of the many Cotswolds walking routes.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Stay on a 500-acre Cotswolds estate set just outside the charming town of Broadway.
  • Choose between luxurious rooms and suites, quirky woodland tree houses, or secluded custom-built shepherds' huts with heated flooring, wood-burning stoves, and outdoor hot tubs.
  • Dine on elevated bistro fare and seafood at the Hook restaurant, or grab a drink at the cozy bar—both located in the contemporary main lodge.
  • Guests can borrow maps and boots for countryside walks, or book on-site activities like archery, falconry, and ax-throwing.
Cons
  • The countryside setting means you'll want a car if you plan on exploring farther afield.

Authenticity

Named for its setting on a hillside of the 500-acre (202 ha) Farncombe Estate (where 16th-century monks once stored their fish in the natural caverns), The Fish feels more like a tiny village than a boutique hotel. Guests dine and mingle at the main lodge, while rooms are spread throughout repurposed stables, historic farm buildings, and custom-built shepherds' huts and tree houses. Interiors blend a classic English countryside aesthetic with a more stripped-down, Scandi style (inspired by the estate's Danish owners)—including pale colors, painted tongue-and-groove walls, heated wood floors, and plush Romo fabrics.

Location

You'll be located in a rural setting northwest of Broadway, known as the "Jewel of the Cotswolds." It's a 30-minute downhill stroll (or a 10-minute drive) to the town's bustling high street, lined with charming honey-colored pubs and antique shops. Chipping Campden is a 10-minute drive east, and Moreton-in-Marsh station is 20 minutes south. Walkers can pick up plenty of scenic routes from the property, including a 4-mile (6 km) loop to Broadway Tower—an 18th-century hilltop folly with sweeping views.

Rooms & Bathrooms

There are just over 60 units spread across the property, all linked by well-lit walking paths. Elegant rooms and suites are arranged above the Coach House and Stables, while shepherds' huts offer a more secluded stay, complete with underfloor heating, wood-burning stoves, outdoor hot tubs, and stargazing windows over the beds. You'll also find three elevated tree houses in a nearby patch of woodland, each with an open-plan lounge and bedroom, a separate room with bunk beds, and two heated outdoor wooden baths on the wraparound oak decks. All units include mod cons like TVs, WiFi, and Nespresso machines.

Amenities

Stroll over to the main lodge to dine on seafood and modern bistro fare at the Hook restaurant, or grab a cozy corner in the bar for pizzas and small plates. Guests can also dine at the neighboring Dormy House Hotel, home to the Michelin-listed MO. You won't find pool or spa facilities here, but there's no shortage of outdoor activities on offer: guests can reserve a session on the estate's tennis courts, book a private on-site activity like falconry, archery, or tractor driving, or stop by the lodge to borrow maps and boots for a country walk. There's also a private cinema room for rainy days.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at The Fish, and it makes an ideal spot for an outdoorsy family vacation, complete with a woodland playground and kid-friendly activities. The tree houses are a perennial hit with little ones (sleeping two adults and two children comfortably with a king bed and a separate room with bunk beds), while the larger suites are also a good option for a more classic stay.
