Charlotte Street Hotel, London
Art-filled boutique stay in Fitzrovia, with exquisitely decorated rooms, an on-site restaurant, and top-notch service
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- This beautifully designed boutique hotel pays homage to the Bloomsbury Group, and you'll find nods to the bohemian artists and intellectuals throughout its interiors.
- Each individually designed room blends English eccentricity with luxurious touches—think printed headboards, statement wallpapers, carefully curated art pieces, and spacious granite-and-oak bathrooms.
- Book a table at the on-site restaurant to dine on creative Modern British fare (including afternoon tea) in a colorful dining area that opens out onto the sidewalk.
- The quiet but central Fitzrovia location puts Bloomsbury, Marylebone, and the West End within easy walking distance.
- The staff here is excellent, offering genuinely warm service and exceptional attention to detail.
- There's no on-site spa, though guests can book in-room treatments by Soholistic.
Authenticity
Owned by husband-and-wife team Tim and Kit Kemp, this is one of eight Firmdale Hotels in London, all known for their boutique service and joyful, maximalist interiors that put a new spin on the classic English country house aesthetic. Every detail here is carefully curated and handpicked by Kit, who showcases her own signature textile designs alongside works by up-and-coming British designers and creatives. Look out for the homages to the neighborhood's notorious Bloomsbury Group (including sisters Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell) throughout the hotel—including an impressive collection of original paintings by Bell and Duncan Grant.
Location
You'll stay at the southern end of Fitzrovia, sandwiched between Bloomsbury and Marylebone and just a 4-minute walk north of busy Oxford Street. Despite its central location, the setting feels peaceful, overlooking a narrow street lined with restaurants and pubs. It's a perfect base for exploring on foot: the British Museum is an 8-minute walk east (passing the leafy Georgian terraces of Bedford Square en route), while the theaters and restaurants of the West End are a 12-minute stroll south. Goodge Street station is just four blocks away, and valet parking is available for a daily fee.
Rooms & Bathrooms
The hotel's 52 air-conditioned rooms range from compact Superior units to a sprawling two-bedroom Virginia Woolf Suite. All are relatively spacious by London standards, and each is individually decorated with statement wallpapers, patterned headboards, handmade textiles, and original art pieces. Pillowtop mattresses, Frette linens, and Bose speakers are standard, and luxe granite-and-oak bathrooms include walk-in showers and RIKRAK toiletries. Suites add deep soaking tubs, sitting rooms, and record players (with a curated selection of vintage vinyls). There's one fully adapted Junior Suite for guests with limited mobility, and all areas of the hotel are wheelchair accessible.
Amenities
The hotel's Oscar restaurant is a highlight, serving creative Modern British cuisine in a colorful, buzzy space that includes plush banquettes, a spectacular Bloomsbury Group-inspired mural, and a zinc-topped bar for pre-theater drinks. Beyond the cozy lobby, you'll find an inviting library with a fireplace, a drawing room with a well-stocked honesty bar, and a small screening room (complete with red leather cinema seats) for regular movie nights. There's no on-site spa, but guests can book in-room treatments, and there's a well-equipped fitness room for fitting in your pre-sightseeing workouts.
Family-Friendliness
Children are welcome at the Charlotte Street Hotel. Spacious two-bedroom suites or Interconnecting Deluxe units are the best options for families, and little ones are treated to thoughtful extras like welcome gifts, children's toiletries and bathrobes, books and games, and milk and cookies at bedtime. Kids' menus and high chairs are available in the restaurant, and the hotel offers babysitting services upon request.
