The Newman, London
Art Deco-inspired Central London retreat, with quietly luxurious rooms, an on-site brasserie and cocktail bar, and a Nordic-style spa
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- The hotel celebrates London's bohemian Fitzrovia neighborhood, aiming to welcome travelers into the surrounding community rather than shut it out.
- Local husband-and-wife team Lind + Almond designed the much-lauded interiors, blending elements of the neighborhood's bohemian and Art Deco character with warm woods and luminous lighting.
- Rooms are some of the most restful in the city, with soft tonal palettes, premium mattresses, and excellent soundproofing; bathrooms continue the attention to detail with underfloor heating, Art Deco-inspired tiles, and local Anatomē toiletries.
- A whole floor is devoted to the Nordic-style spa, where you'll find a sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, and ice lounge alongside wellness treatment rooms and fitness and yoga studios.
- Pop into the downstairs Brasseries Angelica for creative Scandi-French fare, or descend a lacquered staircase for cocktails at the swanky Gambit Bar.
- The Central London location is ideal for walkers: guests can stroll five minutes south to Oxford Street and Soho or amble 10 minutes east to the leafy Georgian squares of Bloomsbury.
- There's no on-site parking, but you'll find paid, private lots within a 10-minute walk.
Authenticity
The Newman is one of London's newest boutique stays (and one of its most talked about). Drawing inspiration from the cast of famous bohemians that once called Fitzrovia home, the hotel's honey-toned interiors read as a love letter to the neighborhood, blending Scandi-style warm woods and luminous lighting with curved lines and intricate details that echo the surrounding Art Deco architecture. Look out for sketches of Virginia Woolf and George Orwell decorating the rooms, nods to Nancy Cunard and Aleister Crowley carved into the inlaid wood floors, and photographer Rory Langdon-Down's black-and-white prints of locals lining the corridors.
Location
Set on the eponymous Newman Street, the hotel puts you right in the middle of Fitzrovia. Once the haunt of intellectuals and artists, it's now a mecca for creative and media types as well as foodies drawn to some of the city's best under-the-radar restaurants. It's an infinitely walkable address—stroll east into Bloomsbury and the British Museum in 10 minutes, or head south for 5 minutes to cross busy Oxford Street into Soho. Transport links are likewise excellent: you're just 5 minutes from both Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Street stations (the latter connects with Heathrow in 35 minutes via the Elizabeth Line).
Rooms & Bathrooms
All of the hotel's 81 rooms are designed as much for function as for beauty, with Naturalmat mattresses and blackout blinds guaranteeing a good night's sleep amid the Art Deco-inspired decor. Even the smallest units include plush armchairs and leather-topped writing desks; other standard perks include MORNING coffee machines and well-stocked minibars (with wellness offerings like sleep patches and essential oils alongside healthy snacks). Bathrooms are a design-lover's dream, with underfloor heating, carved-stone sinks, walk-in rain showers, GHD hairdryers, and Anatomē toiletries. Studios and suites add more square footage and amenities (including a palatial penthouse with its own terrace, cold pool, and sauna). Four rooms are adapted for guests with limited mobility, and all floors are reached via elevator.
Amenities
The ground-floor Brasserie Angelica has quickly become a neighborhood favorite, serving modern Scandi-French fare in a light-filled dining space that echoes the curved lines and mirrored panels of Fitzrovia's famous Victorian pubs. Descend a dimly-lit, lacquered staircase to reach the more maximalist Gambit Bar, where you can quaff cocktails at the copper-topped bar amid swanky Art Deco stylings. You'll also find an extensive spa and fitness space, which includes TechnoGym equipment, a studio for yoga and Pilates classes, a large Finnish sauna, a hydrotherapy pool, a steam room, a halotherapy salt room, and an ice lounge. Treatment rooms offer Swedish massages and facials by Danish skincare brand Nuori.
Family-Friendliness
Children are welcome, though the clientele tends to lean more toward couples and single travelers. There are multiple adjoining room options that sleep four comfortably, and babysitting can be arranged for an additional charge. Four-legged family members aren't left out either: well-behaved dogs get their own beds, bowls, and minibars.
Sustainability
The Newman's community-minded focus doesn't end with the decor. The hotel is fully powered by renewable energy, the on-site restaurant sources ingredients from sustainable regional suppliers, and the welcoming, and the staff work closely with local London volunteer programs (including hosting a pop-up hospitality school for members of the local community).
