Villa Bela Vista, Sintra

Kimkim team favorite · Mid-Range
Historic villa in a prime location near Sintra's landmarks with a terrace that offers exceptional views

Overview

Villa Bela Vista is more of a bed-and-breakfast than a hotel and offers a romantic retreat given its perch in Sintra's historic town center. Just a short stroll from the National Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, guests can easily explore the area's palaces, castles, and gardens while taking in the area's traditional architecture and high-on-a-hill views of the Pena Palace. Guestrooms are spacious, though simply adorned with marble-clad en suites that steal the show. There isn't much in the way of amenities, though breakfast is well received, and the sun terrace makes for an exceptional spot to enjoy those views.

Pros
  • You'll be staying in a historic property (with over two centuries of history) that has been tastefully renovated to maintain Sintra's architectural charm.
  • Enjoy a privileged view of the Pena Palace and an easy-enough stroll through the historic center to notable attractions, like the National Palace, Moorish Castle, and Quinta da Regaleira.
  • Each of the 9 rooms are spacious and decorated in a differing color palatte, all with pretty views of landmarks and/or the surrounding gardens.
  • There's a terrace you can relax on with a drink or a good book and from where you can take in those exceptional vistas.
  • Breakfast comes highly praised and includes a mix of buffet and table service.
  • Villa Bela Vista does its best to ensure you have a comfortable stay and will try and accommodate an earlier-than-3 pm check-in.
Cons
  • If you're arriving before 9 am or after 7:30 pm, you'll need to plan your arrival accordingly and contact the property to arrange check-in.
  • With only nine rooms available, we recommend booking your stay well in advance.

Authenticity

With over two centuries of history, Villa Bela Vista has been thoughtfully renovated to maintain its traditional architecture while providing modern comforts (including stunning marble-clad bathrooms). But it's the views of other historic landmarks that'll win you over. Whether from your understated room or common areas like the terrace, it's hard not to feel a swell of emotion in Portugal's capital of romance.

Location

Perched in Sintra's São Martinho neighborhood, you'll be within close proximity to a number of historic and cultural attractions, and have some of the best views in the city—you can see all the way out to the Atlantic. It's a 4-minute walk to the National Palace and just 10 minutes to the curious Quinta da Regaleira and its eerie Initiation Well and the 8th-century Moorish Castle (beware of the hills, though!). The traditional buildings set amid forested surroundings further add to the area's allure. If you have a car, there's street parking available, and it's only a 30-minute drive to scenic spots like Cabo da Roca.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Each of the nine rooms, across five categories, is dressed similarly but in a different color scheme (evident in the linens, drapes, and upholstery) and is quite spacious. Many have Juliet balconies, and views look over the area's gardens and city, and most, like the Double Deluxe Room, have landmark views. En suites are chic, in wall-to-wall gray and white marble, with rainfall showers and heated floors.

Amenities

What Villa Bela Vista lacks in amenities, it makes up for in views. Make full use of the bed-and-breakfast's terrace with its sweeping views (it's name literally translates to "Lovely View Villa") that look out to Sintra National Palace. There's also a garden and an outdoor fireplace to take advantage of. Breakfast comes highly praised and features the perfect combo of serve-yourself options (fresh pastries, cheese, fruit, etc) and made-to-order dishes.

Family-Friendliness

Parents with kids in tow can book themselves in to the Suite. There's more space to spread out and a sofa bed in the living room to sleep an additional two people. Complimentary cots and extra beds (for a fee) are also available upon request for the Suite and all other guest rooms.
