Top itineraries and travel advice in and around Rabat
Rabat has been the capital of Morocco since 1956 and earned UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2012, but despite its status as the second-largest city in the country, it attracts fewer tourists than its busier siblings to its signature white architecture. Visit the Kasbah des Oudaïas, home to the city’s oldest mosque and Musée des Oudaïas handicrafts museum, or the city’s main landmark, the Hassan Tower. This minaret has sat unfinished for centuries since Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur began the project in 1195, with the intent to build the largest mosque in the world. However, when the minaret was only half-finished at 140 feet, al-Mansur died in 1199, and the project was abandoned. The Royal Palace and Oudaya Gardens are worth a visit, as is the snow-white Saint-Pierre Cathedral, inaugurated in 1991, and the white marble mausoleum of Mohammed V.

Previous kimkim travelers have learned about the city through its culinary scene on a food tour with a local guide, enjoying anecdotes about the city’s history through a variety of samples, or take an excursion to Les Jardins Exotiques de Rabate. This vast series of gardens outside the city, shaded by tall palms, was the work of horticulturist Marcel Francois, who brought plant species from sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and South America here to create a showcase of exotic nature. Or, cross the Bouregreg River on a motorboat excursion to the Marina de Salé, where you can enjoy a walk in its less-touristed medina and see one of the largest mosques in the country.
