Located on the other side of the La Plata River, Colonia del Sacramento (often called simply Colonia) is only 33 miles (53 km) from Buenos Aires. Two ferry companies make the crossing between the two cities, which takes around 1.5 hours (though windy or stormy weather can sometimes cause delays).

Make the most of your time in Buenos Aires with this 4-day itinerary that includes tango, horseback riding and more.

By Ferry

Duration: 1.5 hours, plus travel to/from ferry terminal

Both Buquebus and Colonia Express offer ferry rides from Buenos Aires to Colonia and back. The Buquebus terminal is located in Puerto Madero, which is easily reachable by taxi or private transfer. Make sure to plan enough time to go through border control and bring your passport, since you'll need it to enter Uruguay. The Colonia Express terminal is located in La Boca and is also accessible by taxi or private transfer.

Colonia del Sacramento is a very small city. Once you arrive at the terminal you can take a taxi or private transfer (or even walk, in some cases) to your destination.
