Only 35 miles (56 km) from the wide nature in Coyhaique lies Balmaceda and its powerful glaciers. The scenic Carretera Austral (Route 7) will take you there by car in just 45 minutes. The best thing is to rent your own car so that you can explore this part of the Aysén Region as much as possible.

Balmaceda is close to some of the best sights and national parks in Chile such as Cerro Castillo National Reserve and Reserva Nacional Lago Gral. Carrera which is why having your own car is so useful. This is often called the "Route of the Parks" because of the abundance of national parks on the way, continuing further south. 

By Car or Private Transfer

Duration: 45 minutes (1-2 hours with stops)

You'll begin your journey from Coyhaique to Balmaceda on route 7—also known as the Carretera Austral and one of the most unique roads in the world. Thanks to this road being so scenic, every piece of the journey is sightseeing on wheels. You'll drive for approximately 30 minutes and you'll end your journey on route 245. 

A tip is to take a detour and stop at Valle Simpson that you'll reach approximately 20 minutes after leaving Coyhaique. Make a right turn and get on Route X-674 and you'll arrive in just minutes. This is a perfect stop with another example of the Chilean landscape that just takes your breath away. Bring some snacks with you for the road and take the opportunity to have a hike and relax with a picknick here if the weather allows. Get back on route 7 and continue your drive to Balmaceda. 

After leaving Balmaceda, keep going on the Carretera Austral and head towards the Cerro Castillo National Reserve, continue south to the Marble Caves (Cuevas de Marmol) and you'll find yourself close to many different national parks. A recommendation is to spend at least one day at each place. 

If you aren't looking for a lot of sightseeing and driving isn't appealing to you, then booking a private transfer is the best option. You'll get to Belamaceda fast and still get the scenic views from the road. 

By Bus

Duration: 1 hour

There are buses that will take you straight from Coyhaique to Balmaceda without any stops within an hour. They will usually take you to the airport which is just a few steps away from Balmaceda. Buses run on a daily bases, a few times per day with some exceptions during the weekends.
