Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Barcelona, Gothic Quarter Walk

Private Kid-Friendly Gothic Quarter Walk
Enjoy the perfect pick-me-up after your journey―a generous helping of churros con chocolate

Welcome to Barcelona! A private driver will meet your family at the airport and escort you to your accommodation. Settle in, then ease your way into the trip with the ideal introductory tour―a kid-friendly guided walk through Barcelona's historic Gothic Quarter. It's no matter if you're still a little weary after your travels―a tasty serving of churros con chocolate at the first stop, Barcelona's oldest shop, will soon put some pep in your step! Feel free to sample a few traditional candies while you're there.

Next, head out to explore a few of the Quarter's historical monuments―the Roman Temple, Barcelona Cathedral, and the Giants Museum (where you and the kids can view the large paper maché figures that preside over the city's many processions). Along the way, you and the kids will solve mysteries and puzzles, keeping the tour interactive and fun for even the littlest family members. They'll even have the chance to pretend to be Spanish royalty before you head back to your accommodation with your little princes and princesses and relax for the evening.

Day 2: Gaudí Architecture Walk, Ceramic Workshop

Private Gaudí Architecture Walk with La Sagrada Família
See the beauty of Gaudí's La Sagrada Família on a private tour

No trip to Barcelona would be complete without a close-up look at its most famous masterpieces―the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí. A private tour with an expert this morning gives you and the kids the best chance to learn about Gaudí's techniques, all while you skip the queues and explore three of his most impressive monuments. Start at Casa Batlló, then stroll down the famous "Block of Discord" to reach Casa Milá (La Pedrera) with its distinctive stone quarry appearance. Finally, you'll take an unhurried walk through La Sagrada Família, where you can immerse yourselves in its immensity, detail, and light.

With your creative juices now flowing, it's time to head to the Taller Gingell Studio near Montjuïc Castle to put those talents to the test. Your tutor here is well-practiced in tailoring entertaining and informative ceramic workshops to families, and you'll learn kid-friendly techniques like sculpting and hand-building― skills the kids will also be able to use at home without a lot of expensive equipment. Make your souvenir of the city, whether it be a plate, bowl, or sculpture―the only limit is the size of your suitcase!

Day 3: Horseback Riding & Montserrat Monastery

Riding through the countryside (Photo courtesy of Xperience by Horse)
Explore the striking monastery and alpine countryside of Montserrat

This morning, take the kids out of the city and into the scenic landscape of Montserrat Natural Park for a horseback adventure. Don't worry if you and the kids are inexperienced riders―you'll have ample time for instruction at a local ranch before heading off for a relaxed ride through the countryside. This is an excellent chance for the kids to learn about the basics of horse care, as well as the skill of riding. Small ponies are available for the little ones, so the experience won't be intimidating. After your equestrian escapade, you'll be served a delicious, traditional lunch on the ranch.

In the afternoon, you'll take the funicular up to the monastery of Montserrat, where an expert guide will teach you about the complex's history and art. The monastery itself, with its carved-from-the-cliff appearance, is striking, and there are several additional points of interest. Works by Caravaggio and Picasso can be viewed at the museum, and you can also make time to visit the famous Black Madonna statue and listen to the well-known boys' choir perform. Outdoors, there's plenty of hiking, with ancient caves and hermitages to discover. Afterward, head back to Barcelona for the night.

Day 4: Fly to Málaga, La Herradura Kayaking & Snorkeling

Kayak the crystal-clear waters of La Herradura
Take the kids snorkeling off Andalusia's coast

Hop on a short flight to Málaga this morning, where a private driver will meet you and take you to your hotel in the city center. Then it's off to the quaint, coastal village of La Herradura for a few hours of seaside fun in Andalusia's pristine waters. When you arrive, take some time to explore the marina and horseshoe-shaped bay, then go to the Sports Club. Here you and the kids will be kitted out with everything you need for an afternoon of snorkeling and kayaking. Suitable for all ages, you'll receive plenty of instruction beforehand, and a guide will remain with you to help you.

Have a little practice paddle in the shallows before heading out along the coast into Cerro Gordo National Park. Take in the scenery, with the dramatic backdrop of the cliffs and the clear waters before you. Your guide will let you know when you're in a prime spot to snorkel, then it's on with the fins and goggles for an afternoon exploring the underwater coral world of the colorful fish. As the afternoon draws to a close, kayak back to La Herradura to spend a little time exploring the township or relaxing on the beach before heading back to Málaga.

Day 5: Málaga Treasure Hunt & Beach Day

Private Treasure Hunt in Málaga
Take the kids on an epic treasure hunt through Málaga
Plan your trip to Spain
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.

This morning's activity will require a GPS, an adventure kit, and plenty of clues―all of which will be provided to your family as you take part in a rollicking treasure hunt through Málaga's highlights. As you visit the Atarazanas Market, the Cathedral, and the Roman Theater, the kids will be kept entertained by solving puzzles at each stop. Go at your own pace, allowing as many ice cream and coffee breaks as you want! The hunt finishes in one of the city's beautiful parks―let the kids open the secret treasure box and enjoy the playground while you relax.

This afternoon, take your pick of Málaga's family-friendly beaches. Situated on the Costa del Sol, a quick jaunt out of the city by car, bus, or train opens up a world of opportunity beach-wise, but you can also find several options within walking distance of the city center. With its long stretch of sand and gentle waves, Playa de la Malagueta is a popular choice for families with little ones, or head to the old fishing district of El Palo for small, sandy coves. This is also a great spot to round your day off with a fresh fish dinner at one of the area's many new and trendy restaurants.

Day 6: Caminito del Rey Tour

The Caminito del Rey Gorge
Traverse the scenic Caminito del Rey walkways

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast, then take the kids out of town to hike the memorable Caminito del Rey walkway. Beginning with a scenic transfer through the citrus-lined Guadahorce Valley, you and the youngsters will lace up your walking boots on arrival and make your way through a varied landscape of limestone and forest. With plenty of safe thrills to be experienced walking cliffside, the highlight will probably be the 400-foot (122 m) high suspension bridge. Along the way, your guide will teach your family about the fossils, geology, and history of the area and provide you with a delicious picnic of local produce.

This outing is more suitable for older children, so if the kids aren't quite there yet, feel free to stick around Málaga, where there is still plenty to see and do. Explore the historic Alcazaba Fortress or head to Gibralfaro Castle. There are loads of kid-friendly museums―try the Interactive Music Museum, the Picasso Museum, or the Municipal Heritage Museum. Yesterday's treasure hunt will have given you a great overview of the city―use today to revisit any of the highlights that got a little overlooked in all the excitement of solving the clues!

Day 7: Transfer to Granada, Hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains

Hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains
The kids will love the suspension bridges on the Los Cahorros Trail

It's on to your next destination, the historic city of Granada, a 1.5-hour transfer will take you to your accommodation there before you and the kids head out of the city to spend the rest of the day on a private guided hike in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This isolated, rural area is a wonderful place to experience traditional village life amid stunning mountain scenery. Starting in the tranquil village of Monachil, the well-managed walkways will take you past traditional olive groves and farms as your guide shows your family the locals' way of life.

The kids will love hiking through Los Cahorros―with hanging bridges, canyons, caves, and tunnels, the area is a dream when it comes to exploration and adventures. Bring plenty of snacks and water, as well as your swimming gear. With several waterfalls and pools along the way, there's plenty of opportunity for a refreshing dip or two, as well as an abundance of pretty places to picnic. After about three hours of leisurely hiking and fun, your driver will take you back to your accommodation in Granada to relax for the evening.

Day 8: Alhambra & Generalife Gardens, Evening Tour of the Albaicín

The Alhambra palaces in Granada
Visit the extraordinary Alhambra palaces in Granada

Take a private tour today through one of Spain's most popular destinations―the Alhambra Palaces and Generalife Gardens. Your guide will lead you through ornate courtyards, halls, and chapels, carefully maintained through multiple dynasties and historical transitions. Walk through Granada's colorful history and let the kids imagine living in the Sultan's Quarters or being part of the court of Ferdinand and Isabella. When you've made your way through the opulent interior, head out to the fragrant gardens and enjoy an ice cream or two. Afterward, return to town and enjoy a few hours of free time.

This evening you'll be treated to an evening tour of the Albaicín district, the city's oldest quarter. It's kept a great deal of its medieval Islamic character, thanks in part to its quaint cobbled streets and steep staircases. You'll stop at five different viewing points to get great photos of the city and palaces, but the streets themselves are just as fascinating. With hidden gardens, charming squares, ancient baths, and churches, every corner will bring a new surprise for you and the kids as you listen to the guide explain the area's colorful history.

Pop into the neighboring Sacromonte district, where the kids will be captivated to hear about the Spanish Romani (known as Gitanos in Spain), who famously made their homes in the hillside caves there. The tour finishes with a drink and tapas at a local tavern.

Day 9: Transfer to Seville, Flamenco Experience: Dance Lesson, Museum & Show

Ultimate Flamenco Experience: Dance Lesson, Museum Visit & Flamenco Show
Try out Andalusia's most famous dance for yourselves!

Start today with a comfortable three-hour private transfer to Seville and drop your things off at your accommodation there. Once you've got your bearings, it's off to the Museo del Baile Flamenco. Enjoy a hands-on experience of one of Andalusia's most important artistic traditions, the flamenco, with a class led by professional dancers. You and the kids might feel you're diving in at the deep end―but the lesson is geared to all skill levels, so relax, enjoy yourselves, and have a go at the steps, claps, and handwork of this famous dance.

Once you've finished, have a look at the museum exhibits around you. Originating from the influence of various cultures, including Romani and African, the flamenco has become a symbol of Spanish identity, serving both as a vehicle of tradition and even protest at times. As the day draws to a close, watch everything you've learned today come to life before your eyes with an evening show in the museum's courtyard. You and the kids will delight in the performances of talented singers, dancers, and musicians―and after your efforts this morning, you'll likely have a new appreciation of their skill!

Day 10: Seville Cathedral & Alcázar, Triana Pottery Class

Ceramic class
Take a private family pottery class in the Triana District

Take in some of Seville's highlights this morning with a private tour of the Cathedral and the Royal Alcázar. Start at the world's largest Gothic cathedral, and if the family is feeling energetic, climb La Giralda, the bell tower, for panoramic views over the city. Down below, don't miss the tomb of Christopher Columbus, the historic treasure room, and several famous artworks. Next, take the short walk over to the Alcázar, one of Spain's best examples of Mudéjar architecture, a blend of Moorish and Renaissance styles. Enjoy exploring the ornate reception rooms, pavilions, and gardens with the kids.

The afternoon brings another opportunity for hands-on creativity. Head to the Triana district, home to Seville's artisans and famous for its azulejo ceramic tiles, pottery, and textiles. There's a fun, off-the-beaten-path vibe and bountiful markets and shops to trawl for authentic souvenirs, so allow a little extra time here. Nothing beats making your own memento though, so take a family pottery class and craft a traditional ceramic tile to take home. Before leaving Triana, grab a bite for dinner―there's a vast array of good, authentic eateries in the district.

Day 11: Day Trip to Doñana & El Rocío

Enjoy a light hike in Doñana National Park
Enjoy a light hike in Doñana National Park, then visit the charming town of El Rocío

Today's day trip will take you a world away from Seville's bustle as you and the kids spend some time in the spectacular Doñana National Park. Home to some of Europe's most important wetlands, you'll find abundant wildlife species―keep your eyes peeled for deer, boar, badgers, and the endangered Iberian lynx, as well as migratory bird species and the Iberian imperial eagle. You'll start with a short, easy hike (suitable for the kids) before donning your riding gear and proceeding on horseback. You and the kids will love the freedom of riding along the beach, enjoying the park's wild beauty.

Lunch is your own choice―purchase the makings of a tasty picnic and continue enjoying the outdoors, or relax in style at a local restaurant. On your way back to Seville, your driver will take you to the pilgrimage village of El Rocío. Millions of pilgrims come to the church here each year to visit the statue of the Virgin of El Rocío, which legend has it was mysteriously discovered by shepherds in Doñana's wild stretches. Your guide will explain the town's history and give you some time to explore it yourselves or enjoy a coffee break before taking you back to your accommodation in Seville.

Day 12: Fly to Madrid & Depart

Take the kids to see Seville's Metropol Parasol

It's the last day of your trip, but if you have a few hours before you need to get to the airport, don't waste them! Stroll through the city center and enjoy a spot of shopping or a coffee and snack. Take the kids to the Metropol Parasol, an urban artwork you can explore from every angle. The kids will love taking the elevator up and scampering along the top of the "mushrooms," and they'll be just as happy at the playground at the bottom while you admire the structure from below.

When it's time, head to Seville Airport and catch your flight to Madrid International Airport and onward to your next destination. Safe travels!
