Explore the best of Athens from the Acropolis to the Ancient Agora on a family tour, hearing Greek myths as you go
Overview
Discover the highlights of Athens' titanic ancient history with this 4-hour private tour geared especially towards families. On this adventure, you will get to see the best of two of the city's finest sights, the famous hilltop Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, finding out all about fascinating Greek mythology as well as the country's actual history, which is equally exciting! Kids and adults alike will enjoy discovering the truth behind the enthralling legends of Athens' gods and heroes.
After meeting your guide, you'll start your walk up to Acropolis Hill, the "Sacred Rock" that defines Athens' history and dominates the city skyline. You'll visit all the popular monuments, including the Theater of Dionysus, the original home of theater and performed drama in Greece, Temple of Athena Nike, the earliest of the Acropolis' ionic temples, dating to 420 BC, and Temple of Erechtheion, regarded as one of the finest examples of classical architecture in the world. This is of course in addition to the spectacular Parthenon, the temple dedicated to Athena, goddess of wisdom and protector of Athens. As you go, your guide will help explain about the legends of the greats in Greek mythology, such as the almighty Zeus, the most powerful god, Athena (goddess of wisdom), Poseidon (god of the sea), Dionysus (god of wine and theater) and many more. The stories are guaranteed to keep kids entertained and asking questions.
After enjoying Acropolis Hill and learning some of the city's secrets, you'll walk down to the Ancient Agora, the city's old marketplace. This is heralded as the world birthplace of democracy, with Socrates and Plato once hosting many political and philosophical discussions here. You'll learn about more gods and deities, including Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) and Hera (Zeus' jealous wife) as well as riveting legends such as that of Theseus and the Minotaur.
This tour starts in the morning to minimize the effect of crowds and heat and finishes at around lunch time. Please bear in mind that the Acropolis involves quite a number of slippery and steep steps. Please wear comfortable shoes, a sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and bring your own bottle of water with you. Eating inside the archaeological site is not allowed, but you are recommended to bring your children's snacks for them to eat in between the visits to the Hill and the Agora. Please also note that strollers are not allowed on the Acropolis Hill; in case of younger siblings or babies, you are recommended to have a carrier backpack or a sling.
