What you'll do

The Basque Country is renowned for high-quality, locally grown goods, so it's the perfect place for a foodie day trip. Your private driver will pick you up in San Sebastián and whisk you into the idyllic Basque countryside. After a 45-minute drive south, you'll reach the Goierri Region, known as the Basque Highlands and home to scenes of rural villages, snow-capped peaks, and rolling pastures.

In this setting, you'll learn why the Basque Country is a foodie destination and how its farmland, slow food movement, and traditional dishes enhance that reputation. You'll start by visiting a farmers' market and trying some of the local produce and products. In particular, the area is known for its high-quality vegetables, charcuterie, and bread, plus the Idiazabal cheese, made with whole raw milk from Latxa and Carranzana sheep breeds.

Now that you know more about regional goods, you'll go to a family-owned farm dating back to the 16th century. The farm specializes in raising indigenous pigs and operating self-sufficiently with conventional methods. Join the family in their txoko (traditional dining room) for a delicious meal of local treats. You'll enjoy charcuteries and a regional staple, Tolosa black bean stew.

Bid farewell to the family and start heading back to San Sebastián. Along the way, you'll stop in the town named after the region's traditional stew, Tolosa, where you'll find a Chocolate Museum and try the famous wild game Jai Alai.
