Hike, Boat & Lunch on the Bay of Pasaia, San Sebastián

Though San Sebastián is an incredible city with a fascinating downtown, one of its greatest appeals is the surrounding countryside.

Spend some time out of the hustle and bustle to enjoy the incredible coastal scenery along the picturesque Bay of Biscay as you follow the St. James Way, a northern section of the historic Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. You'll meet your guide just outside San Sebastián's Old Town, where you'll start your easy-to-moderate hike. There are a few route options to choose between, from 3.7-6 miles (6-10 km) round trip, with gains of 492-1,312 feet (150-400 m) through a few ups and downs. The effort is worth it, as you'll enjoy some truly incredible sea views and experience northern Spain's wild nature.

Your guide will lead you to the cliffs, passing Zurriola Beach before reaching your first lookout point. You'll pass several other viewpoints and observation decks, perfect spots to rest your feet, sip some water, and enjoy the scenery. The route features inlets, caves, and plenty of cliffs before turning toward the Bay of Pasaia, a natural basin with picturesque rock structures, fishing villages, and a lighthouse. 

Continue to the small hamlet of Pasaia, a historic fishing village with some of the area's best seafood. Sit down at an authentic tavern and replenish your strength with fresh fish and local drinks. This experience mimics the life of the Basque whalers of the 16th century, which you can continue to explore by visiting a living museum showcasing wooden ships. Before returning to San Sebastián by public transportation, you'll enjoy a boat cruise around the bay, stopping to check out another coastal village with time for a stroll and a coffee break in its square. Don't forget a bathing suit if you want to swim in the sea when the captain drops anchor!
