West of Bilbao is the
Liébana region, famous for
Picos de Europa National Park. Take a break from the cities and coastline and explore the mountains, valleys, and villages of beautiful
Cantabria.
Start in the small town of
Fuente Dé, where a cable car takes you up into the Picos de Europa. On your way to Fuente Dé, you'll cross rivers, forests, small villages, and the famous
Hermida Gorge. The cable car ride is just four minutes and takes you nearly 6,000 feet (1,823 m) above sea level. Enjoy stunning views and explore the closest surroundings of the station.
Next, head to the
Monastery of Santo Toribio, one of the four holy places of Christianity. The monastery houses the
Lignum Crucis, the largest piece of preserved wood from the Cross of Jesus. You can also enjoy the scenery at the viewpoint of the San Miguel hermitage.
Finally, you'll explore
Potes, the capital of Liébana and one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Highlights of this town are its cobbled streets, bridges, and medieval Tower, which is called
Torre del Infantado. Enjoy a short walking tour of the town and some free time to eat and shop.
