What you'll do

Meet your guide and set off on a discovery walk dedicated to the life and work of Italy's other Michelangelo, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, one of the country's most influential painters. As you make your way through Rome's historic center, your guide will share stories about the artist's remarkable talent, troubled personal life, and lasting impact on the art world.

Your first stop is San Luigi dei Francesi, home to three of Caravaggio's most famous paintings. Here, you'll examine The Calling of Saint Matthew, The Inspiration of Saint Matthew, and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, learning how the artist's signature tenebrism, the dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, brought religious scenes to life in a way that was unprecedented for the time.

Next, continue to the Basilica of Sant'Augustino to view Madonna di Loreto (also known as Madonna of the Pilgrims) in the Cavalletti Chapel. As your guide explains the painting's symbolism and reception, you'll gain insight into Caravaggio's commitment to portraying ordinary people with striking realism, a choice that often challenged artistic conventions. The experience concludes at Santa Maria del Popolo, where two additional masterpieces await. As you admire these final works, you'll deepen your understanding of the techniques, themes, and artistic innovations that made Caravaggio a defining figure of the Baroque era.
