Children's Eternal Rainforest Guided Hike, Monteverde

The Children’s Eternal Rainforest (BEN) is considered as the biggest private reserve in Costa Rica, it is part of the Water and Peace Biosphere (“Biosfera Agua y Paz”) from the UNESCO, as well as founding member of the Costa Rican Network of Private Reserves and also member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Overview

The Children’s Eternal Rainforest (BEN) is considered as the biggest private reserve in Costa Rica, it is part of the Water and Peace Biosphere (“Biosfera Agua y Paz”) from the UNESCO, as well as founding member of the Costa Rican Network of Private Reserves and also member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).  Its mission is to maintain, preserve and rehabilitate the topical ecosystems and its biodiversity, through environmental educational activities, reforestation, investigation, protection, and monitoring, as well as sustainable development and ecotourism (trails, talks, hikes, and biological stations). 

The place has more than 22.000 primary and secondary forest hectare, as well as regenerating areas. This Reserve has been preserved thanks to the effort of children and adults, together with schools and other organizations in more than forty countries around the world.

What you'll do

Begin your adventure at the entrance of the Children's Eternal Rainforest (BEN), the largest private reserve in Costa Rica. This biodiverse sanctuary is home to a myriad of orchids, butterflies, birds, and all of the country's wild felines, including the elusive jaguar. As you embark on your guided tour, prepare to immerse yourself in nature, support the protection of the rainforest, and learn about the unique species that call this place home.

Your naturalist guide will lead you along well-maintained trails, identifying flora and fauna that you might not spot on your own amidst the dense foliage. As you trek through the reserve, you'll be regaled with fascinating stories about the park's history, including its eco-initiative origins led by students in Sweden in the 1980s. The project garnered support and funding from 44 countries worldwide, and today, the Monteverde Conservation League, a Costa Rican non-profit organization, manages the reserve.
