What you'll do

Your day starts in a quiet village just south of Chania, where you'll be welcomed into a family-owned home by your gracious host. Step into the open-air kitchen, set under the shade of olive and avocado trees, and enjoy some refreshments like juice or Greek coffee, traditional biscuits, or even a shot of raki if you're feeling adventurous. Then it's time to start the cooking class, beginning with a dish of roasted lamb which will cook in the outdoor wood-fired stone oven for two hours.

While the lamb cooks, learn about the dish's historic significance to the island and why it's known locally as "the thieve's dinner," and help gather herbs and produce from the garden. Learn the delicate art of wrapping grape leaves to make stuffed vegetables and dolmades, and roll out dough to create traditional kalitsounia pies, filling them with cheese and wild greens. You'll prepare some appetizers last, including favorites like tzatziki, dakos, and Cretan salad.

After about two hours of cooking and conversation, sit down and enjoy the beautiful traditional Cretan dishes you've created, accompanied by generous pours of local wine. This is a true family experience, so don't be surprised if your charming host's family members join you at the large, garden table, eager to share their delightful humor and fascinating insights about life on Crete. Linger over a sweet dessert and more wine or coffee, then thank your hosts and part ways with new cooking skills and some cherished family recipes to take home with you.

Our family always includes a cooking experience in our vacations, and the KimKim team absolutely nailed it with this one. The family farm, the kitchen setup, the delicious food, and the take-home recipes were all incredible. What really set this apart was that we actually got to do the cooking ourselves—something many tours don’t allow. It felt like a truly authentic Greek culinary experience, and one we’ll never forget. The quality of the lamb was outstanding. The rest of the meal—plentiful and fresh—was equally impressive. The beverages, from the refreshing non-alcoholic lemonade to the adult drinks, were absolutely fabulous!

The family team that serviced us was outstanding! I simply cannot tell you how much at home the made us feel, and they did EVERYTHING for us, as far as cleanup, setup and mundane prep work. The class size was perfect, and we all had so much fun getting to know each other and laugh and share the final meal together.
Transport
We had originally planned to arrange a taxi through the hotel, which wouldn’t have been a problem. However, a few nights before our cooking experience, the Cooking Company kindly called and offered to provide a transfer for a small fee. This made everything so much simpler and took the planning off our plate. We truly appreciated this thoughtful extra service.
