What you'll do
Meeting your guide and fellow foodies, you'll stroll the short distance along San José's streets to make your way to Mercado Central, one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Dating back more than a century, this lively market is packed with stalls selling traditional foods, fresh produce, and local beverages. Your host will introduce you to the ingredients that underpin Costa Rican cuisine, sharing insights into local farming practices, seasonal products, and everyday food traditions.
After gathering the freshest ingredients, you'll head into the kitchen, where the cooking portion of the experience unfolds. You'll prepare the country's favorites, such as ceviche, sweet plantain empanadas, picadillos, and crispy patacones, under the watchful eye of your chef, all the while learning new skills and recipes you can easily recreate at home. You'll enjoy a relaxed atmosphere as you cook, sipping your choice of mojito, soft drink, and tropical juice, making the experience feel more like cooking with friends than attending a formal class.
Then, once everything is ready, you'll sit down together to dine on the meal and dessert you've created, which is soon complemented by a brief coffee-tasting session, where you'll also get to learn how to brew coffee the Costa Rican way.

Day Trip to Doka Coffee Plantations, Poás Volcano & La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Coffee with a Sloth at Toucan Rescue Center
Located just a 30 minutes drive from downtown San José, The Toucan Rescue Center offers a unique opportunity to escape the fast paced city and encounter Costa Rica's fascinating wildlife. If you don't have a rental car, you can easily ask the front desk of your hotel to call you a taxi (generally around $20 USD one way). The hotel staff can provide you with a number to call for a return taxi or you can ask the rescue center's staff to help you call one.
Upon arrival at the center, you'll spend a few hours enjoying adorable sloths and delicious coffee on this two-for-one guided walk. Sip some delicious brew made from the sanctuary's partners at Cafe Britt while watching young sloths enjoy their morning exercise, breakfast, and sometimes even a bathroom break (a once-a-day activity for most sloths).
This educational walk is an opportunity for sloth lovers to get close to their favorite animal. You'll learn all about the history and mission of the rescue center from your guide, and even meet some of the dozens of other animal species that are taken in and rehabilitated at the center.
Costa Rican coffee is great, but nothing beats enjoying it with a cuddly sloth!
