Erfoud Fossil Museum, Erfoud

Overview

The vast Sahara desert and region once laid under one of the world's oceans. As a result, archeologists have found sources of endless fossils; many concentrated in the area around the town of Erfoud. Visit the region's fossil museum, which prepares and sells fossils to collectors, universities, and museums worldwide.

Enjoy perusing the museum's fossil collections, which consist mostly of prehistoric versions of squid and snails. However, the museum also has exhibits featuring other unique finds from all over Morocco, including meteorite fossils, a giant Trilobite, desert roses (petrified sand that has almost turned into glass), and fossils of dinosaur parts.

In addition to housing these collections, the museum also focuses on preparing fossils and extracting them from rock. You can learn about this process and watch it in action, as professionals use a unique set of tools to collect, clean, and prepare the fossils for sale to the many collectors and museums worldwide.
