What you'll do

Experience Lisbon's gastronomy and history on this guided walk through some of the city's most historic neighborhoods. This half-day excursion takes place in the morning and the afternoon, and you'll begin the journey by meeting your expert guide at a central meeting point. Your guide will introduce you to the city's history and then take you through the areas of Mouraria and downtown. This excursion includes six stops at local haunts and 16 tastings, so be sure to come with an empty stomach and comfortable shoes, as you'll be walking on hilly streets and stairs typical of Lisbon's older areas. While most dietary restrictions can be accommodated, note that this may not be suitable for vegans.

You'll walk through Mouraria, the city's hilly medieval quarter that was home to the Moors in the 13th century until their expulsion from Portugal in 1497. This neighborhood is also the birthplace of Fado, as the first famous Fado singer, Severa, lived and died here, so you'll discover all this and more as you stroll its cobblestoned streets and take in the colorful historic buildings. Mouraria has remained a multi-cultural area, and you'll stop in various locations here to taste the Portuguese flavors that reflect the different influences of those who have shaped this country over millennia.

This journey will also take you to downtown Lisbon, where you'll try some tasty dishes away from the crowds, and your guide will offer insights into the city that only locals know. After the sixth location, you'll be free to return to your accommodations to rest and digest or continue walking around the city with your newfound knowledge.

The tour guide, Dani, was delightful. She was knowledgeable about the foods and their ethnic origins as she took us around to the various neighborhoods in historic Lisbon. Food/ginjinha/wine tasting was top shelf in each location and she was highly entertaining and fun - great sense of humor. As a small group tour, we all enjoyed the food very much as well as enjoying each other over some delicious foods. It was a very special afternoon. We would highly recommend this tour with Dani. Tips for future travelers

Great introduction to foods found in Portugal and the tasting gave us some ideas for some treats to take home. Do not plan on using GPS to navigate the cities as there are problems with GPS. We ran into other travelers who experienced similar difficulties. We ended up using a paper map in addition to the GPS. Take along a bottle of water.

Very nice tour. However, we’re now in Florence on our own and booked a similar food tour here which was phenomenal compared to the one in Lisbon.
