What you'll do
This two-hour experience begins when you meet your guide and the rest of your small group at the Húsafell Activity Centre. From here, you'll set off on a short drive to the trailhead, enjoying the rugged West Iceland scenery as your guide shares how the vast property (once a working farm) has been owned by the same family for seven generations.
When you reach the trailhead, you'll set off on foot, following your guide along a narrow road and a winding dirt trail. The route and distance can vary depending on the weather, and if conditions are poor, you may skip the walking portion. Your destination is a remote canyon, where two steaming hot pools are tucked alongside an icy stream. Descend a series of 64 steps to reach the canyon floor, and pop into the tiny communal changing rooms, built from salvaged timbers and repurposed materials (like clothing hooks made from the farm's old horseshoes).
After a quick rinse in the outdoor shower, it's time to ease into the pools, each fed by geothermal waters that hover around 86°F to 105°F (30 °C to 41°C). The secluded setting means you'll be surrounded by nature as you unwind in the soothing waters and enjoy panoramic views of sweeping Icelandic scenery. If you're feeling brave, you can also take a plunge in the glacier stream in between soaks. After about 45 minutes, it's time to dry off, bundle up in your outerwear, and make the return climb to the trailhead, where your guide will take you back to the starting point and bid you farewell.

The Hike to Húsafell Canyon Baths was a disappointment for us. It was advertised as a hike into a thermal pool, but in reality, the hike felt like just going down a dirt path with some steps. The pool itself was nice, but compared to other pools we've been to, it was underwhelming. It's not something we would have chosen to do had we known what it was.
