What you'll do

Your Menorcan excursion starts in Fornells, where you'll meet your driver, grab a seat in the vintage 4WD Land Rover, and set off without a fixed itinerary. Your guide will customize the route to your group's particular interests, but you'll focus on a dramatic section of the island's northern coast, likely pausing to explore historic sites like the Torre de Fornells (a 19th-century British watchtower), stop by rural artisan producers (like a family-run dairy farm), and venture into some of the island's most exclusive private estates (like Santa Teresa and Sa Cavalleria), that are rarely open to the public.

While you traverse dirt tracks and hidden backroads in the rugged 4WD, your guide will share fascinating stories of the island's history, archaeology, and culture, and lead you to areas of the island rarely seen by travelers. Another highlight of the drive is a stop at the remains of Sa Nitja, one of the first Roman settlements in the Balearic Islands, where you'll discover Roman tombs and original pottery fragments while marveling at the sea views. You'll also pass the ruins of the Torre de Sa Nitja, built in 1800, which once controlled the northern access to Menorca from its strategic clifftop perch.

As evening begins to fall, it's time to settle in at one of the island's most spectacular clifftop beauty spots, where you'll sit down to a light picnic of delicious Menorcan appetizers, including traditional DO (Denomination of Origin) cheeses, cured artisan meats like sobrasada and carnixua, and a glass of local wine. Your guide will time the evening perfectly so that you have the best possible views of a colorful sunset over the Mediterranean before you return to Fornells in time for dinner.

Only two other people were on our tour, and we had an open-air vintage Land Rover! Our guide, Julia, is a local and was so knowledgeable about Menorca, its history, and its landscape.

Drove through private farms and stopped at a dairy farm to buy local cheeses. The farm has been in the family for generations! This was a highlight and an unexpected stop!

We ended on the cliffs above the beach to watch the sunset and have local cheese, meat, crackers, and drinks! There was no better way to end the evening.

Tips for future travelers

It's 30 minutes outside of Mahon, where I stayed, and it was a 25-30 EUR taxi ride each way. It was totally worth it! I got a taxi from my hotel, and there was a taxi stand at the meeting point in Fornells.
