What you'll do

This immersive experience begins when you join your passionate local guide and the rest of your small group at the meeting point near Praça Martim Moniz. You won't set off quite yet—first, take some time to chat and get to know each other as you prepare for an evening of storytelling, street art, gastronomy, and live music. The 5.5-hour itinerary is fluid, allowing you to embrace the spontaneity of each stop, but you'll focus on Mouraira and Graça, two of the city's most authentic and multicultural neighborhoods.

Wind your way through Mouraria's labyrinthine alleys as you hear about its roots as the historic Moorish quarter, and learn how the soulful strains of fado were birthed in its local taverns as working-class and immigrant communities shared their stories of saudade (deep longing). Stop to meet neighborhood residents, and refuel with tastings at locally owned businesses, sampling diverse offerings like traditional ginjinha (Portuguese sour cherry liqueur) and homemade Argentine-style empanadas.

The walk continues uphill into Graça, another tight-knit area filled with stories of migration and resilience. Here you'll slow your pace as you ascend a steep but spectacular staircase decorated with colorful street art, listening as your guide explains the stories and meanings behind the pieces and artists. You'll reach the lofty Miradouro da Senhora do Monte just in time for sunset, watching the golden light gild Lisbon's terracotta rooftops, hilltop castle, and the Tagus River from one of the city's highest lookout points.

After working up an appetite on Lisbon's famously steep streets, it's time to head to dinner (not included), either at a historic fado bar or a family-run African restaurant. Let the food, wine, and conversation flow, then end the evening in style with some live music—whether you're moving to the beats of samba and cumbia at a cultural venue that supports kids from vulnerable communities, or watching an impromptu jam session in the secret garden of a trendy open-air bar.

(Please note: this experience includes a fair amount of walking, including uphill sections and stairs, so a moderate level of physical fitness is recommended. Travelers will rarely walk more than five minutes without breaks, but should expect to cover about 15,000 steps.)
