Palio Eve Celebrations, Trial Race & Dinner Experience, Siena

Participate in one of Siena's most cherished traditions on the eve of the exciting Palio di Siena during this special, privately guided evening experience. You'll explore the historic center as colorful contrada flags flutter overhead and your guide shares stories of rivalries, rituals, and community pride that have defined the famed race since the Middle Ages. You'll get to watch the final evening practice before gaining rare access to a neighborhood celebration, culminating in a traditional community dinner that offers an authentic glimpse of a side of Siena few visitors ever experience.

Your evening begins in Siena, either July 1 or August 15, where the city is already fully leaning into Palio mode. You'll meet your guide and venture into the historic center, strolling beneath the colorful banners of the contrade, Siena's historic neighborhood-based districts, and learn about the fierce rivalries, centuries-old traditions, and deep sense of community that make the Palio much more than a horse race.

Your guide will then lead you to the prova generale, the fifth trial or heat, which takes place in the evening before the Palio kicks off the following day (there are six in total, the final being the provaccia the morning of). The atmosphere is electric as locals gather, and with the help of your guide, you'll be able to interpret the gestures and crowd reactions that would otherwise be easy to miss on your own. It's an exciting preview of the pageantry and passion that define Siena's most famous tradition.

Next, you'll have the rare opportunity to experience a district's evening celebrations, namely the Cena della Prova Generale (General Trial Dinner), an open-air street dinner that brings hundreds of contrada members together in torch-lit squares and narrow streets of each competing neighborhood. Your guide will explain the customs surrounding "Palio eve," share etiquette tips, and help you navigate the lively gathering spaces to your community table, answering any questions you may have. Here, they'll part ways, leaving you to enjoy a traditional four-course dinner. Buon appetito!
