What you'll do

This immersive walk through art history begins when you meet your guide and the rest of your small group at Plaça de Carles Pi i Sunyer and stroll a block over to Els Quatre Gats, a beautiful example of Catalan Modernisme architecture by the famous Josep Puig i Cadafalch. As you admire its arched windows and intricate stonework, your guide will share how Picasso first visited the tavern at 17, and it became his favorite haunt and a hub for the city's Modernist artists and bohemian thinkers to exchange ideas over absinthe.

The walk continues to Sala Parès, once a paint shop and now a gallery. Learn how it was the first Spanish gallery to exhibit Picasso's works, and step inside to see how it's changed over the years. Continue 10 minutes east, winding through atmospheric Gothic Quarter alleys and historic avenues, to reach Carrer d'Avinyó 44, the address of a brothel once frequented by Picasso. The women who worked there inspired his famous piece, "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," now one of the finest examples of his Cubist period and renowned for its subjects' direct gaze.

As you pass by the historic building known as La Llotja, you'll hear stories about Picasso's time at the former fine art academy, where he studied from the age of 14 after his family moved to the city in 1895. Your walk draws to a close at the Museu Picasso (Picasso Museum), where you'll skip the lines and step inside to witness 4,200 of the artist's works. Part ways with your guide after they share some tips and must-see highlights of the collection, then take your time as you explore all five floors of the museum, housed in a series of beautiful Gothic palaces that date back to the 13th century.
