What you'll do
Your sailing adventure begins with a transfer to Kissamos Port, about 45 minutes from Chania. Once there, you'll meet your captain for the day and step aboard your private 36-foot (11 m) sailboat. Sit back and relax as you take in the views of northwest Crete's coveted coastline—you can even try your hand at fishing or navigating with the captain en route.
Your first stop is Gramvousa, an uninhabited island whose rugged landscape is home to a 16th-century Venetian fortress on top of a mountain. Gramvousa became known as a "pirate island" when insurgents during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s were trapped there by the Ottomans and resorted to piracy to survive. You'll have time to explore Gramvousa independently, hike up to the fortress, or relax on the boat and take a dip in the cool waters.
Next, hop back on board and sail to the neighboring Balos Lagoon, famed for its warm azure waters and fine white sand. Spend the rest of the trip exploring Balos as you please. Take advantage of the snorkels on board to observe colorful marine life, or relax and sunbathe while taking in the fantastic views. While you're at Balos, a tasty spread of Cretan meze (small plates) will be served on the boat, accompanied by refreshing beverages. After a few hours at Balos, you'll sail back to Kissamos and bid farewell to your crew.
