What you'll do

Kick off your city walk at Largo di Torre Argentina, a sunken archaeological site that holds one of the most pivotal moments in Roman history. Standing on the spot where Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BCE, your guide sets the stage with captivating storytelling, bringing to life the political tensions, betrayals, and ambitions that led to the fall of a dictator. From here, you'll follow your guide, learning about the emperors who succeeded Caesar, as you take pause at notable landmarks like the Pantheon, Piazza di Pietra, and Piazza Colonna.

You'll "meet" Augustus, Rome's first emperor, likely at his family mausoleum and the Ara Pacis altar, and learn how his vision—and his right-hand man, Marcus Agrippa—laid the foundations for an empire that would endure for centuries (like that of the Pantheon, commissioned by Agrippa himself). You'll also hear about Julia, Augustus' brilliant and rebellious daughter, whose personal life became entangled with politics and power, as well as the polar-opposite legacies of rulers, like Nero and Hadrian, one infamous for excess and cruelty, the other remembered for his intellect and cultural achievements.

The history lesson concludes at Piazza del Popolo, a neoclassical square home to the Porta del Popolo (or Porta Flaminia), through which the historic via Flaminia passed, offering a fitting end to your journey through Rome's imperial past.
