What you'll do

This immersive, three-hour walk begins when you meet your expert private guide near the Thiseio metro station and set off in the footsteps of Athena, listening to the captivating stories and legends that helped shape this ancient city. Start with a stop by the statue of Theseus, an 18th-century bronze depicting the great hero of Greek mythology, and hear how the demigod's dramatic exploits (including slaying the Minotaur) helped unite Athens under his rule.

You'll also follow winding trails up the Hill of the Nymphs (one of Athens' famous Seven Hills) for sweeping views over the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. Pause at the top to see the National Observatory of Athens, and learn how the Ancient Greeks traced their stories of gods and heroes into the constellations. Other highlights include a stroll through Plaka, one of the city's oldest (and most charming) neighborhoods, where you'll navigate winding alleys lined with colorful, bougainvillea-draped houses, and refuel with some refreshments (like a strong Greek coffee or an ice cream).

Pass by the Temple of Olympian Zeus, a sixth-century BCE ruin dedicated to the ruler of Mount Olympus, and take in a picture-perfect view of the 15 remaining columns as your guide explains how cautionary tales about the all-powerful god helped shape the culture and laws of ancient Athens. The excursion winds down with a peaceful stroll through the National Gardens, a 38-acre (15 ha) oasis in the heart of the city, where you'll dive into the origins of Pan (god of nature and revelry), and learn about the starring roles flowers play in some of the most important Greek myths.
