What you'll do

Your Crete wine excursion begins with a pick-up from your Chania hotel. From here, take a scenic 30-minute drive west through the island's lush countryside grooved with vines and olive groves. On the way, your sommelier guide will introduce you to Crete's wine-making history, which dates back 4,000 years and was imported from Egypt by the Minoans. Palaces like Knossos had their own vineyards, and one of the world's oldest wine presses was unearthed in the Cretan village of Palekastro.

Eventually, you'll reach Anoskeli Winery, run by the Mamidakis family and named after their birth village in Crete. Soak up the views at this vineyard, which is also an olive mill and home to hundreds of olive trees. Here, you'll learn how to taste wine from your sommelier as you indulge in a guided tasting of five wines accompanied by snacks.

Next, drive on through the countryside, stopping to see the world's oldest olive tree in the town of Ano Vouves. Experts believe this ancient tree is between 2,000 and 4,000 years old, yet it still produces olives today. Your next stop is Karavitakis Winery, which offers sweeping sea views. Enjoy a tasting session, sipping a range of white, red, rose, and dessert wines.

Afterward, you'll venture 30 minutes east to the famous Manousakis Winery in the foothills of the mountains. Here, you'll take a guided walk through the estate, learning about the entire wine-making process, from vine to bottle, including a visit to the barrel room. Finally, head to the tasting terrace to sample five of the estate's signature wines, followed by a full lunch. Savor traditional appetizers, salad, a main dish, and dessert accompanied by unlimited wine, then relax on the 35-minute drive back to your hotel in Chania.
