What you'll do

After getting picked up from your hotel, you'll transfer to a family-owned vineyard tucked into the Cretan countryside. Here, surrounded by sun-drenched vines, you'll join the seasonal grape harvest—clipping bunches of indigenous varieties, like romeiko, vidiano, vilana, kotsifali, and mantilari, and gathering them just as locals have done for centuries. As you work, your hosts will share stories of the land (and may sing and even dance to traditional Cretan songs) and explain how Crete's winemaking heritage dates back to the ancient Minoans, whose legacy still shapes the island's viticulture today.

From the vineyard, you'll head to the family's restored 19th-century cottage house and into the wine cellar, where the freshly picked grapes are transformed using old-fashioned methods. The method? Grape treading, of course. As a hands-on experience, you'll take part in the pressing and early stages of winemaking using your bare feet to "stomp" on the grapes, a great way to glean insight into techniques that predate modern machinery. It's a rare chance to see (and feel) how wine was once made across the island's villages.

The experience culminates in a celebratory feast, where you'll sit down with your hosts to enjoy local dishes and toast to the harvest. It's an intimate window into rural Cretan life and a meaningful connection to one of the island's most enduring traditions.
