What you'll do

Sail the coast of Barcelona in style and taste the Mediterranean wines of the Alella region on this five-hour luxury excursion. Meet your skipper and board the boat at Port Olímpic, just on the edge of Barcelona's Ciutat Vella (Old Town). You'll enjoy 1.5 hours on the water, taking in Barcelona's skyline as you cruise past the city's beaches and marinas. Feel the warm sea breeze, enjoy light snacks and drinks, and spot city skyscrapers, historic landmarks like Mirador a Colom (a 197-foot (60 m) monument to Christopher Columbus), and the green hills of Parc Natural de Collserola in the distance.

Once you arrive at El Masnou, you'll disembark and travel by minibus to an organic winery run by the same family for 14 generations. Wander the 40-year-old vineyards with your host to learn about different grape varieties and how the climate affects their growth. Next, follow your sommelier guide to the wine cellar in the basement of a 15th-century, Gothic-style country house. Here, you'll learn how traditional winemaking methods are combined with innovative modern techniques.

Once you've discussed the ins and outs of the production process, it's time to taste a selection of the vineyard's exclusive wines. You'll sample four wines paired with typical Catalan snacks consisting of pà amb tomaquet (Catalan tomato bread), cheeses, meats, and a coffee to finish. End your experience with a picturesque drive back to Port Olímpic and bid farewell to your guide.

We took the van to the winery, and once we got there, we joined about 15 other people to tour the vineyards, storehouse, cellar, and barrel storage areas.

Allela is a newer vineyard that produces white and red wines. After the grounds tour, we had a wine tasting with the group. Because ours included the sailing with the winery tour, we had an upgraded charcuterie board with more to offer compared to the others, and it was a sweet surprise.

After a couple of hours, our driver informed us that the weather wasn't good and that we couldn't take the sailboat back, so we took the van back to Barcelona. They shared different dates and times to go back and sail around the coast for two hours. A few of us did it the next day.

Tips for future travelers

If you have seasickness, be prepared because there may be waves. Ours was a little bumpy due to the waves and wind, and somebody got sick.

Van ride to the winery; boat ride back.
Winery was lovely.
Lunch was some ham and bread with tomato... While it was tasty, it felt like a snack, not a meal.
The boat ride back was rougher than expected. We had to hold on for dear life. (Was surprised putting on life jackets wasn't advised or offered). Two of the other guests were ill.

We loved this experience! The winery tour was really informational and beautiful. We left with so much new knowledge for wine tasting and pairing. We had a wonderful guide and an incredibly fun group. The sailing trip was such an enjoyable way to end the experience. I would definitely do this again and recommended it to a couple we met later in our Spain trip who were on their way to Barcelona (they ended up doing it and loving it as well!). Read more

Tips for future travelers

Wear comfortable shoes you don't mind getting a bit dirty. Also carry a light sweater or jacket because the sailing portion does get a bit chilly.
