The tour starts with San Gimignano, the beautiful and romantic “town of towers.” As one of the most characteristic of Tuscany’s hilltop villages, this little hamlet features numerous austere medieval towers that survived tumultuous centuries. Next, walk along the ancient Via Francigena, the main route to Rome for European travelers and pilgrims, and peruse the artisanal boutiques and shops. You’ll find saffron, known as “red gold,” the centuries-old Vernaccia white wine, and leather and ceramic goods. You’ll also have time to visit the San Gimignano Cathedral or Civic Museum.

Your first stop will be in Staggia, where you’ll visit its castle. The famous Soarzi family built this hamlet and its fortress around 994 CE. Then continue your ride along the Chianti Classico paths, passing forests, neat rows of vineyards, and medieval villages. At the end of the cycling portion of the tour, you’ll visit a winery for a real Chianti Classico experience!
