What you'll do

This family activity is the perfect way to explore Athens and its myriad mythological stories. After arriving at Thisseio Metro Station, you will begin your journey with the origin story of Theseus - king of Athens - his famous battle with the Minotaur and the heartbreaking story of his father's final act. 

Right next to the statue of Theseus, you will find the first public park in Athens. From there, you will adore the temple of Hephaestus, learn, the arguably, saddest origin story in all Greek mythology and be entertained hearing the birth of the first spider! No more than five minutes' walk away is the Church of Agia Maria. Within, the temple's premises you will find remnants of the Temple Zeus and you'll get to know some of the most intriguing love affairs of the God of Gods. 

The next stop is the Heraklidon Museum. With the guidance of your expert guide, you will explore the permanent collection of ancient Greek sculpture and ceramics, housed in a 19th-century mansion. Here you will have the opportunity to visit the museum's garden which is also home to a café, gift shop, and terrace with views of the Acropolis. 

After that, you can take a short walk to the National Observatory of Athens on Nymph Hill for a stunning view of the city below. From there, you'll make your way to Pnyx Hill, the birthplace of democracy, and the Holy Church of Demetrios Loumpadiaris and Lofos Filopappou, two sites of spiritual significance. You can explore the many monuments and statues that adorn the area while learning more about the history of the city.
