AdAstra, Florence

Kimkim team favorite · Upscale
Stylish historic estate with epic gardens and eclectic, artful rooms, conveniently located near Florence's top sights

Overview

Occupying the upper floors of an 18th-century palazzo (with Marchese Torrigiani for a neighbour), AdAstra overlooks Europe's largest private city garden in the arty Oltrarno district. Guests stay on a quiet, residential street south of the Arno, within an easy walk of Piazza Santo Spirito and Pitti Palace, and a 15-minute stroll to Ponte Vecchio. Rooms are individually styled with a mix of period details and midcentury to 1970s Italian furniture, each with a claw-foot bathtub in the bedroom and views of the garden or the quiet Via del Campuccio. Amenities center on a generous breakfast served indoors or on the expansive wraparound terrace, an honesty bar for evening drinks, and limited on-site parking by reservation.

Pros
  • Overnight among the aristocracy in this historic Torrigiani family property, with the marchese (marquis) himself as your roommate (his private apartments are on the ground floor).
  • AdAstra is located in one of Florence's most atmospheric neighborhoods, offering a quieter, more local experience while remaining close to major sights, artisan workshops, restaurants, and wine shops.
  • Relax on the large shared terrace, complete with loungers and sweeping views over the Torrigiani Garden.
  • Rooms are individually decorated with a quirky collection of curated artwork on display, from framed designer scarves and magazine covers to old football pics and constructed Lego sets.
  • There's an elevator for those with limited mobility (or strollers) with reception, the breakfast rooms, and the majority of bedrooms on a single floor.
  • Book one of the two romantic garden suites (located separately from the palazzo) for added privacy.
Cons
  • You won't find full-service amenities, such as a gym, spa, or restaurant, here.
  • Unfortunately, Europe's largest private garden is intended for viewing, not exploration, although it's possible to secure a guided tour for an additional cost.

Authenticity

AdAstra blends aristocratic Florentine heritage with playful, contemporary design, set inside the ancestral Torrigiani family palazzo—still home to the marquis—overlooking Europe's largest private city garden. Original frescoes, parquet floors, and period details anchor the space in centuries of history, while midcentury Italian furniture, upcycled pieces, and curated art from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s give each room its own personality. From Pucci scarf wall art to artisanal lighting sourced from local makers, the guesthouse feels both Florentine and delightfully whimsical (much like nearby sister property, Oltrarno Splendid).

Location

Tucked in the boho-chic Oltrarno district, AdAstra sits in the marquis' private Torrigiani Garden just a 15-minute walk from Florence's historic center. It's a 7-10-minute wander to the Pitti Palace, Brancacci Chapel, and Palazzo Santo Spirito (lined with artisan shops, cafés, and markets), and cross the river in about 15 minutes to reach the Uffizi and Palazzo Vecchio in another 5. The neighborhood's artisan studios, hip boutiques, and lively cafés give visitors an authentic, less touristy glimpse of Florentine life. Despite its centrality, the property's garden-facing locale keeps things peaceful.

Rooms & Bathrooms

All 16 rooms, located on the top two floors, are individually styled, mixing restored architectural features with vintage Italian furniture, bespoke lighting, and one-of-a-kind art. Every room has a freestanding (roll-top) bathtub positioned right in the bedroom, plus a separate, equally stylized bathroom outfitted with a shower, C.O. Bigelow products, and robes and slippers. Views vary between the wraparound terrace, the garden, and the quiet Via del Campuccio, with some rooms offering private outdoor seating or secluded garden settings, accessed by a personal golf cart.

Amenities

You can enjoy a generous buffet breakfast of eggs, local cheeses, prosciutto, pastries, and house-made jam, in the sunny salon or out on the terrace overlooking the garden. Tea, coffee, and an honesty bar are available all day, and the expansive terrace doubles as the property's unofficial lounge for reading, sunbathing, or sunset drinks. A small on-site team offers personalized restaurant recommendations and local tips, and limited private parking is available with a reservation.

Family-Friendliness

Families are welcome, although the atmosphere and room layouts tend to lean more toward couples. Several rooms are large enough to accommodate extra beds, which are complimentary for children up to the age of three, and cots are available upon request. Some whimsical room decor—like Lego models and Tintin books—may delight younger guests. The gardens are strictly off limits unless you've booked a guided visit (for a fee).
