Authenticity

If it's authenticity you're after, this is the place to experience it on Skye. Eilean Iarmain is part of a 23,000-acre (9,308 ha) estate bought by the late Sir Iain Noble in the 1970s as part of his crusade to preserve the island's Gàidhlig-speaking traditions. What was once a 19th-century fishing port became a small, atmospheric hotel, with rooms tucked into whitewashed outbuildings and the former inn, and a cozy bar that serves the estate's own whiskeys and gins around an open fire. Though the hotel was leased to new ownership in 2025, its warm, attentive staff and management have all stayed on, and the only changes on the horizon are some light face-lifts to the older rooms.

Location

You'll want a car to make the most of the hotel's setting in the tiny village of Isleornsay on Skye's southernmost Sleat Peninsula. An hour south of Portree and the island's more famous northern landscapes, it's a place of fewer crowds and gentler, lusher landscapes dotted with sheltered bays and quiet fishing villages. The hotel overlooks the Sound of Sleat, the tidal island of Orsay (or Eilean Iairmain in Gàidhlig), and its historic lighthouse, with views toward the Knoydart Hills beyond. The closest major village is Armadale, located 15 minutes down the coast, and you're about 20 minutes from the Skye Bridge and two hours from Inverness. Free parking is available on-site, including two charging stations.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel's 16 rooms and suites are spread between the main building, the Garden House, and the Steading, a former stable block. Options range from cozy Twins and Doubles to large, split-level Suites with separate sitting rooms, and all have an old-fashioned, countryside feel, with homey touches like pine paneling, sash windows, antique furniture, and chintz curtains. Bathrooms are modern and spacious, most with walk-in rain-style showers and heated towel rails. Each room faces either the gardens or the sound; for the full island experience, request one of the units with lighthouse views. 

Amenities

The hotel restaurant offers a simple but beautifully executed menu that highlights Skye produce, estate-raised venison, and fresh-caught seafood (you'll spot the langoustines being delivered by boat each morning). Breakfast is served in the same dining room and is highly recommended—particularly the salty, buttery porridge, Mallaig kippers, and scrambled eggs with local smoked salmon. Stroll over to Bar Am Pràban to enjoy the estate's own malt whiskeys around a roaring fire and a set calendar of traditional music nights, or book an excursion with the groundskeeper for a day of clay pigeon-shooting, wildlife-watching, or trout fishing.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at Eilean Iarmain. Under-twos stay free of charge, with a reduced rate for ages 17 and under. The largest suite is the best fit for families, offering plenty of room with two bedrooms, but the split-level design may not be ideal for young toddlers.
