Culloden House, Inverness
18th-century country manor (and former Jacobite headquarters) between Inverness and Culloden Battlefield, with fine dining, whisky bar, and parkland trails
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Overnight in one of the most historic and unique stays in the Scottish Highlands, with direct ties to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Battle of Culloden, discover beautiful architectural details, like marble fireplaces, twinkling chandeliers, brass antiques, and elegant period common rooms.
- Set on a quiet 40-acre (16 ha) estate, you'll have idyllic access to parkland and woodland trails leading toward Culloden Forest, a restored walled garden replete with seasonal bluebells and rhododendrons, croquet, tennis, and a duck pond.
- Culloden House is an excellent base for sightseeing; Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns, Fort George, Cawdor Castle, and Loch Ness are all a short drive away.
- Service is polished, attentive, and friendly, with staff who know the property's history well.
- The award-winning restaurant showcases Scottish ingredients, plus the whisky bar houses an extensive collection of malt whiskies, with pre-booked tastings available.
- Culloden House is on the outskirts of Inverness and is therefore not walkable to the Highland capital or nearby attractions.
- The traditional decor may feel dated to guests accustomed to modern luxury.
- As a Grade A-listed historic building, the hotel has no elevators, and some guestrooms require navigating stairs.
Authenticity
Culloden House is one of the more atmospheric historic stays near Inverness, with parts of the Grade A-listed mansion dating back to its medieval origins before its 18th-century Georgian transformation. The house reflects the influence of preeminent architect, Robert Adam, through its Palladian architecture, ornate Adam plasterwork, fireplaces, chandeliers, and lofty public rooms. Its strongest local connection, however, is to the Jacobite uprising: Bonnie Prince Charlie used the house as his headquarters in the days before the Battle of Culloden in 1746, and the Ferintosh Whisky Bar even displays the "Prisoners of '45" if you're keen to trace any ancestral ties. The decor is traditional and at times old-fashioned, but the manor's history and grandeur more than make up for it.
Location
Set on a quiet, 40-acre (16 ha) estate on the eastern edge of Inverness, the historic manor is about a 15-minute drive from the city center and 10 minutes away from Inverness Airport. The location is especially convenient for travelers exploring Highland history by car, with Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns (and Championship Golf at Castle Stuart) within 10 minutes' drive, and Fort George, Cawdor Castle, and Loch Ness within 20 minutes, while the Moray Firth coastline and some of the Highlands' best golf courses are easily accessible for day trips. Complimentary parking and EV charging stations are available on-site.
Rooms & Bathrooms
The 27 rooms and suites are individually decorated in a more traditional aesthetic and could do with a refresh. You'll find antique furnishings, somewhat fussy-patterned fabrics, and historic architectural details such as crown molding and wainscoting. Many are spacious, with some featuring fireplaces, chandeliers, marble fireplaces, and/or sitting areas; suites add even more space, often with separate living areas. Superior Rooms and Suites afford the best views over the front or back lawns, while Classic Rooms may have restricted views, side-carpark outlooks, or lower ceilings. Bathrooms vary by category: all include showers, and some have bathtubs. For families or groups, the separate Garden Mansion beside the walled garden offers four double ensuite bedrooms and a shared living area.
Amenities
Guests can settle into period sitting rooms with fireplaces, like the drawing room and morning room, play tennis or croquet, wander woodland trails, explore the restored walled garden, or enjoy afternoon tea. Dining is a highlight, with a well-regarded restaurant, led by Scottish Chef of the Year Scott O'Keefe, focused on Scottish and near-local ingredients such as Loch Fyne salmon, Orkney crab, and Highland beef. An a la carte breakfast of hot and cold options, a set-menu lunch, and fine dining dinner (note there's an encouraged dress code) is served in the Adam's Dining Room or Bonnie Prince Charlie Room for private affairs, while the Ferintosh Whisky Bar offers an extensive whisky collection and prearranged tastings.
Family-Friendliness
Kids are welcome at Culloden House, and the extensive grounds provide plenty of space for families to roam the gardens, watch ducks at the pond, play lawn games (tennis and croquet), and enjoy walks along the estate's woodland trails. The self-contained Garden Mansion is the strongest option, accommodating groups of four (maximum two kids) with four en suite bedrooms and shared living space, while some suites in the main house sleep three (maximum one child) and may have separate living areas. Parents should note that the main house doesn't have an elevator, and some guestrooms are on upper floors.
Sustainability
Culloden House has made clear steps toward more responsible hospitality, earning a Green Tourism Silver Award in 2025. The certification considers areas such as waste management, energy use, procurement, and biodiversity. The kitchen prioritizes local suppliers where possible, helping reduce travel and packaging while supporting Highland producers, and uses organic or sustainably sourced ingredients as much as possible. The addition of six EV charging stations also makes the property more practical for guests traveling with electric or hybrid cars.
