Authenticity

Toravaig House was first built in 1933 as a private home; in 2004, long-time Skye residents Ken and Anne Gracie Gunn transformed it into an intimate boutique stay, adding contemporary interiors that echo the surrounding Sleat landscapes with a palette of petrol blues, warm browns, and slate grays. There's not much to do in the immediate area beyond coastal walks and distillery visits, but that's part of the draw here—picture heading "home" after island explorations to spend a rainy afternoon settled in the lounge, complete with a well-stocked honesty bar, a roaring fire, and painterly views toward the Sound of Sleat. 

Location

You'll stay among the green pastures and sheltered coves of the Sleat Peninsula, located an hour south of Portree on Skye's gentler southern coast. The hotel sits just off the main A851 road, half a mile above the tiny waterfront village of Teagh, where you'll find just a few inns, the renowned Torabaigh Distillery, and a shoreline dotted with tidal pools and the ruins of Knock Castle. A 10-minute stroll down the sidewalk takes you to the distillery and its café, but for more amenities, you'll need to drive 8 minutes down the coast to the larger village of Armadale. Free parking is available on-site.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Toravaig House offers just 11 rooms—10 in the main building and a separate garden suite. The contemporary furnishings are elevated with local touches like Harris Tweed textiles and sheepskin-draped armchairs, and bathrooms feature walk-in rain showers, waffle robes, and Arran Aromatics toiletries. Standard rooms are on the small side; Deluxe units add space, super king-size beds, espresso machines, and the best views, while the garden suite features a separate soaking tub and private terrace. One ground-floor room is adapted for travelers with limited mobility, but upper floors are reached via stairs.

Amenities

The private country house theme extends to the amenities, which are limited but thoughtful. The honesty bar in the lounge offers a nice selection of local whiskies, and breakfast is simple but well done, with options for a cold continental buffet or cooked-to-order dishes like smoked kippers and whisky-infused porridge. There's no restaurant, but peckish guests can order charcuterie boards or cream teas in the lounge or on the terrace, or catch a complimentary shuttle to nearby sister hotel, Duisdale, home to a two AA-Rosette restaurant with a refined (if somewhat pricey) pre-fixe menu.

Family-Friendliness

The limited room options (and no extra beds) mean this isn't a great fit for families, though small cots can be added to rooms for babies and toddlers under two.
