Rocpool Reserve, Inverness
Georgian mansion in a residential neighborhood, a short stroll to Inverness Castle, with a bar, Michelin Guide-praised restaurant, and River Ness views
My favorite of the journey for the staff, food and room amenities.
Overview
Kimkim's Take
- Minibars are stocked with complimentary nonalcoholic drinks and snacks like local shortbread.
- Rocpool Reserve is in a great location on a residential street lined with mature trees, not far from the River Ness, and less than a 10-minute stroll to Inverness Castle.
- The staff is exceptionally friendly, and you can expect attentive, warm service that feels personal from the moment you arrive.
- Secure an Extra Decadent top-floor room for perks like a private terrace outfitted with a hot tub and pretty Inverness views.
- Free on-site parking is a nice bonus if you're touring the Highlands by car.
- There isn't an elevator, and some guest rooms have split-level layouts with in-room stairs.
- Though in a residential neighborhood, Rocpool Reserve is located on Culduthel Road, a busier thoroughfare, so you may experience some street noise.
Authenticity
Perched above the River Ness in a restored Georgian mansion, Rocpool Reserve was originally built as a private residence in one of Inverness's more upscale neighborhoods. The property was later expanded and transformed into a boutique hotel, now managed by Inverlochy Castle Management International (ICMI) as part of its Luxury Collection. Under ICMI, the hotel partnered with the late Michelin-starred chef Albert Roux, further strengthening its ties to Scottish hospitality and showcasing regional ingredients through refined dining. Continuing the tradition, the hotel offers early evening "tasting spoons," a series of artfully prepared small dishes paired with a curated selection of signature cocktails, fine wines, and spirits.
Location
Set on a quiet, tree-lined residential street above the River Ness, Rocpool Reserve is just a 5-10 minute walk from the center of Inverness and its cultural attractions, including Inverness Castle, as well as the riverside promenade, shops, and restaurants, while iconic Highland destinations like Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, and Cairngorms National Park are all within about 30 minutes' drive. Inverness' central location also makes it a convenient base for day trips to destinations such as the Isle of Skye, Fort William, and Orkney, and Inverness Airport is only a 15-minute drive away.
Rooms & Bathrooms
The hotel's 11 individually designed guestrooms are split into four tiers, from Hip and Chic categories to the more spacious Decadent and Extra Decadent options. Interiors are moderately contemporary; they're quite dark in furnishings and textiles with a color palette that borders out dated (golds, oranges, dark brown, and bright red), and are outfitted with super king or king-size beds dressed in Egyptian cotton linens. Room layouts vary considerably—some feature split-level designs with internal staircases, while top-tier rooms add private balconies or terraces with outdoor hot tubs (and nice views). Bathrooms are notably spacious and include both deep soaking tubs and separate showers, along with premium Elemis bath products, robes, and slippers.
Amenities
Service is excellent. The attentive staff delivers a highly personalized experience despite the absence of a traditional reception desk, welcoming you into colorful lounge spaces. A full a la carte breakfast, serving classic Scottish and contemporary options, is included in your stay, while the guest-only dining program offers afternoon tea, tasting bites, cocktails, and a mix of lighter bites and more substantial small plates throughout the day. Additional amenities include a cocktail bar, complimentary parking, and outdoor terraces that take advantage of the riverside setting during warmer months.
Family-Friendliness
Rocpool Reserve tends to appeal most to older couples seeking a romantic Highland getaway; children are welcome. Rooms sleep two guests, though complimentary cots and extra beds are available upon request for younger kids (about 8 and younger). Families will also find entertainment options such as board games, DVD players with children's films, and Xbox consoles available on request.
